There is a horrible smell inside. We've taken the spray arm off and cleaned what was visible but that did not get to the problem. Where is the smell coming from?
If you have an air gap on your sink that attaches to a garbage disposal, it may be clogged.
The drain hose from the dishwasher is connected to the air gap.
There is another hose that connects the air gap to the garbage disposal.
The garbage disposal connects to the plumbing drain.
Sometimes, the hose from the air gap to the garbage disposal gets clogged with garbage and will not allow the dishwasher to drain properly. So, everything gets backed up.
Solution: Disconnect the hose from the air gap to the garbage disposal.
Remove the plastic or chrome cover to the air gap and unscrew the nut that holds the air gap to the sink.
Push the air gap down under the sink and pull it out.
You'll see the 2 hoses still attached to it.
Now, you can easily remove the hoses from the air gap and replace it. Air gaps are very cheap. Costs between $5 and $10 at any home improvement store.
Check the big black hose that was attached to the garbage disposal and see if it has garbage in it. You can either clean it out or replace it.
Then, reassemble by reversing the above steps.
Run your dishwasher with a cup of vinegar in it and it should clear out the dishwasher drain hose of any debris.
