First set the IP address for your cable modem to 192.168.1.1 and set the IP address for netgear wireless router to 192.168.0.1
now plug one end of networking cable in cable modem and the other end in the wireless
also make sure both have DHCP enabled......
Can you pls confirm if you have cable or PPPoE connection. Also, please connect the modem directly to the computer and let me know the results:
A. Click on Start—Programs—Accessories—Command Prompt.
B. In Command Prompt window, type in 'ipconfig' and hit 'Enter'. Note down the IP Address, Subnet mask & Default Gateway here.
Once I have this information, it will be quite easy to configure the router.
Thank you for all the information you have posted. Please note that is not possible for both cable connection and PPPoE to coexist. I believe you have cable connection. Follow the below steps to reset and reconfgure your router:
RESET:
At the back of the router you will find a small tiny hole (which says restore to factory default settings). Press the button with the help of a paper clip and hold it down for 30 seconds. After 30 seconds, please release the button and power off the router for 5 seconds then power the router back.
CONNECTIONS:
1. Connect a Ethernet cable from the modem to the WAN port of the router (isolated port).
2. Connect the computer to the router using any one of the 4 available ports. Please make sure that there is no direct connection between the modem and the computer (either using Ethernet cable or USB cable).
3. Power off the modem and the router after making the connections.
4. Power on the modem and wait for the lights, then power on the router.
RECONFIGURE:
1. Open the browser (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox or Safari).
2. Access the router, usually with http://192.168.1.1 or http://www.routerlogin.com.
3. Login to the router with the Username as "admin" and Password as "password" (please note that the Username and Password are case sensitive).
4. Click on 'Basic settings' from the left menu and select 'Use Computers MAC Address' from 'router MAC Address' section.
5. Click Apply.
6. Once it updates the settings then power off the modem and the router. Power on the modem and wait for the lights, then power on the router.
I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue.

Hey, I got it. Just follow the below steps to first configure settings on your computer connected to the modem:
1. Click on Control Panel from the Start Menu.
2. Double Click on 'Internet Options'.
3. Under browsing history click on delete button and select delete all.
4. Click on security tab from the top and select default level and Apply the settings.
5. Click on Content tab from the top and click 'clear SSL state'
6. Click on 'Connections' tab from the top of the window.
7. Make sure that 'Never Dial A Connection' is selected from the 'Dial-up and Virtual Private Network Settings'.
8. Click on 'LAN settings' and make sure there is no check for proxy server.
9. Close the Internet Options window.
10. Make sure that all the firewalls and pop-up blockers are disabled (includes Windows Firewall, PoP-up blocker and Phishing Filter).
Now perform the below steps to configure the router:
1. Connect a ethernet cable from the modem to the WAN port of the router(isolated port).
2. Connect the computer to the router using any one of the 4 available ports. Please make sure that THERE IS NO DIRECT CONNECTION BETWEEN THE MODEM AND THE COMPUTERS (either using Ethernet cable or USB cable).
3. Open the browser(Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox).
4. Access the router settings with the address: www.routerlogin.com/basicsetting.htm
5. Whenever prompted for username and password please enter Username as 'admin' and Password as 'password'.
6. Click 'setup wizard'(at the top of list) from left menu.
7. Select yes and Click next.
8. In case you get the message: 'You already have a valid internet connection do you still want to continue', click 'YES'.
9. It should give you either a "Dynamic IP Detected" or "PPPoE detected".
10. If you get "Dynamic IP Detected" click on 'Next'. On the next page select 'Use Computer MAC Address' under router MAC Address' and click 'Apply'.
11. If you get "PPPoE detected" click on 'Next'. Enter the login name and password provided by the ISP. Click Apply.
12. From the left menu go to 'router Status' and check if you get the internet port ip address.
13. Click on 'Logout' (at the bottom of the list) from left menu.
14. Open up another browser window and try to access internet.
I am pretty confident that this will help you configure your router. Make sure to follow these steps excatly as mentioned.
Best of luck.

I have a cable modem. But it uses PPPoE as far as I know. This is the copy paste from ipconfig/all. I had my netgear router wirelessly connected at the time. But I was connected to internet direct from laptop to modem via ethernet.

Thanks Anand.
I followed your instructions to the letter as I copy/pasted into a word doc. But, still no connection.
Trying to connect after your instructions gave me this:
Dialing...Wan Miniport PPPoE
Dialing attempt 1.
Unable to establish a connection.
Also, the problem comes up with "Error 815. Maybe entered incorrect service name" When I connect to internet direct through modem....It doesn't mention dialing up. It just says "verifying username and password......Connected"
Also, the Netgear router automatically detects a PPPoE connection in the setup wizard. And I am connected via a cable into the wall.
So, I'm super confused.
