The display panel can go low emission due to age, but I doubt it will need a new one. There are 2 electrolytic capacitors that need changing in the grid drive voltage circuit- not really a DIY job, but not that difficult for anyone knowledgeable with a soldering iron.

The problem is in the audio output ic chip it has probably shorted causing it to load down. First check there are no shorts in the speaker wires, if okay! the above mentioned part must be replaced.
Hook a spare monitor to the video output, if okay! the inverter board or the backlight behind the LCD display is defective, but if the symptoms are the same for both, the Video Graphics Card is bad usually built into the motherboard.
before changing disk, you can try reformat and re install. The disk may be okay and you are having windows problem especially because safe mode works okay.

I sounds like you have blown the woofer. open the unit and check. first disconnect the leads on the woffer, then use an ohm meeter. If you don't have an ohm meeter use a 9v battery across the speaker terminals. If you hear a thunk when the battery touches the terminals the speaker is okay. If tyou don't it's gone. If the ohm meeter reads some number like 4 to 9 the speaker would be okay. If it reads nothing or 000 then it's gone. If you need a speaker you can order it from Pro Line Music 215-736-8055
your system might have damaged the systems video drivers and reverted to legacy. try to re-install the display drivers again. if you look in the system/device manager for the display it may just say vga , which can only give you 800x600 native mode. if you right click on the desktop /properties advanced /display adapter it should have the name of your video card.
