to fix this problem you need to open up the xbox, remove the motherboard from the metal enclosure.and remove the aluminun plate from the GPU, that will be the long flat one, not the tall one.
after you remove it, you need to turn it on and it will change from 1 red light to 2 red lights, it means over heating. unplug the xbox, because it won't turn off. put the plate back in, make sure it is strait so it seats flat on the GPU, plug the machine back on and it will work.(this wil be that esasy in 85% of the cases)
If it does not work you need to remove the plate and CLEAN the THERMAL CONPOUND from the GPU and Aluminun plate, and then aplly some NEW thermal compund on the gpu, put the metal piece on it again a nd try it on !
you can go to any pc shop and get the thermal compound and the remover, it should solve your problem

Do you get an error code?
if not try this
Turn off your Xbox 360 console, disconnect and reconnect all cables, and then again turn on your console. If this step doesn't resolve the problem, try step 2.
2.Turn off the console, and then disconnect any connected accessories, such as controllers, Xbox 360 Memory Units, and the Xbox 360 Hard Disk. With these accessories removed, restart the console to see whether the problem persists and to pinpoint whether the problem involves the console or an accessory.
good luck
Unfortunately thats what they call the E74 error. You will need to call Microsoft at 1-800-4-My-Xbox for a replacement or repair. Most of the times it's free for the consumer such as yourself.
Thanks
