You need sofrware that captures the scan from the scanner. usually comes with the printer, you have to opemn the program and tell it to scan and save.
Scanning by just placing a paper on the scanner and pressing the scan button just tells the printer to scan and probably print a copy, but it doesnt send it to the computer unless theres a program asking for it. Check the installation cd and go through the software that came with it.
The first thing I would do is to completely uninstall, reboot & reinstall the HP software suite. If the unit can copy, the scanner function is OK from a hardware standpoint. However, when your software attempt to initiate a scan, the software is failing to communicate with your all in one properly.
