I recently bought an ibm laptop, now it shows on the laptop that i am getting perfect signal strength, but it shows little or no connectivity, and explains to me that i need a network key??? please explain what ive done wrong
Wireless security is commonly performed by encryption using wep setting a network key. That key is to be shared by both the router and the network card to allow encrypted communications. If appears you have not provided the network key that was configured into wireless router to the wireless adapter card to allow them to exchange encrypted communications. The preferable solution would be to get the active network from the router and provide in to the wireless adapter in the prompt / request you were presented. This will protect you wireless network from access by those you have not shared the key with.
