Most probable cause would be the start capacitor. Most modern machines would not start if the lid is not properly closed. It detects thru the lid switch.
next time send the model number, open the lid, look on the right side and there should be a hole in the top, that's the lid switch,it's used so the washer won't run if the lid is open for safety reasons, set it to spin and with a screw driver push down on the plastic piece in the hole,if nothing happens push in and release,do this a few times,if you don't hear a clicking sound when you push up and down the switch is bad or close the lid and open it an inch, close it and open it a few times,no clicking sound the switch is bad.
Whirlpool and Frigidaire top load washer sometimes have a problem with the lid switch / lid lock mech. Sometimes it's just a matter of screws backed out due to vibration, Whirlpool models from 2004, 5, 6.
If the lid switch is defective, your washer can't spin and may not function at all. The switch is inside the washing machine main housing near the door frame. Often you have to raise or open the top or front of the washer to get to the switch. If it's defective, you need to replace it.
Some machines have a special lid-switch fuse near the lid switch, inside the control panel. If this fuse blows, the unit won't fill with water until you replace the fuse.
It would help to know what washing machine you have. I'll assume that it is a top loading, direct drive washer less than 15 years old. If that is false, please send more info, otherwise..... When the washer is done filling, is the... 1: Motor running, but agitator is not moving? Probably a motor coupler, if that's ok, the transmission is probable. 2. Washer silent, motor not running? Check the lid switch, some models will not agitate without the lid closed, see if the lid plunger is missing, or if the lid switch actuator is loose/broken, if you can see the lid switch actuator, try depressing it with a pencil or some other slender, non-conductive item, sometimes the switch breaks just enough so that the plunger on the lid cannot reach it. If that checks ok, you will need to start making voltage reading from the timer to the motor. hopefully it will not come to that. : )
it sounds as if your lid switch is out of position. in the past depending on the model i have taped a penny or two to the top of the switch so the plunger makes contact
