Sounds like the hi voltage diode or capacitor are intermittant, the thump is the transformer drawing current when the magnetron tube calls for hi voltage to operate, you will see the lights dim slightly every time it cycles the mag tube for heat

Kitchenaid Superba KEMS307D Microwave buzzes, looks like it works, but doesn't heat. Full normal display, tray rotates, but fan doesn't sound normal.

Most likely causes - shorted high voltage rectifier, or failed high voltage transformer, or shorted high voltage capacitor, or shorted magnetron. If an odor accompanied the failure, high voltage rectifier or transformer most likely. All of these components operate on 4000 v, or more - with enough current to kill you. Make sure the unit is unplugged, and the high voltage capacitor is fully discharged before testing.

Microwave making dull thumping noise when NOT in use

I called a technician out today. Seems like the problem is the circuit board. It wasn't working properly and the sound is the fan. The fan is supposed to turn on when the microwave is in use and off when it is not. In this case, the fan continued even when the microwave was not in operation. A new circuit board has been ordered and will replace the old one when it arrives. For now, I can still use the microwave, but I have to unplug it everytime I finish heating something up. A little inconvenient, but at least it'll still heat my food up in the meantime.

Whirlpool otr microwave

Once i opened up the microwave, I found that some kind of capacitor or something (had two wires going to it) had fell down on top of the fan. I had to rig the plastic mounting bracket and re-attach it to a panel inside. That took care of the rubbing noise. It turned out that some one had unplugged the wire that powered the turntable. That took care of that. it seems to work fine now. Steve

I have an Emerson (2 weeks old). It heats well but there is a thumping noise when the table rotates and sometimes the table will operate with a jerking motion.

It sounds like the table is'nt positioned properly on the base it sits on, most are not attached and can be easily removed for cleaning purposes, try repositioning the table on the base.

GE SPACEMAKER MICROWAVE OVEN

Is it a rhythmic thumping, or intermittent, or one thump when it first starts?

If it's rhythmic, it may be a failing turntable motor or stirrer.

If it's a thump just when you hit Start or when the magnetron turns on at the beginning of the cook cycle, it may just be a common noise that they sometimes make due to the magnetic field produced by the high voltage transformer.

Please write back with more details if you need further help.

If the turntable tray is positioned and seated properly, it is probably a failing turntable motor.
