How do i know wether the thermistor is shorted / open, defective?

I have problem with my tv ( brand is sony ).,its a dead set..the fuse keeps on blowing when i put it..i juz want to know y,even if i replacing with the same ampere rating..the problem is all about in the power supply section..im focusing in the power supply section..i suspected thermistor as the causes of the problem..now i juz want to know if the device defective ---> (thermistor)..can i used ohmmeter to test wether if it is shorted or open? how do i know if it is open/shoted ,defective? it has three therminal on it..im so much confused on how to deal with it.email me pls. If this device "it has three terminals on it", I believe this part is not a thermistor, rather a power resistor (2 inside part)...does the part show a small diagram with resistor symbols (jagged lines) printed on it? Does it have a part number? Also attempt to measure the current at the fuse...first determine if it is AC or DC and if the projected value may blow the ammeter's fuse, then attach the leads of an ammeter at the fuse points (watch polarity if DC!) and set to highest range and progress to where lowest possible range can be used to get a decent measurement. Does it come close to the fuse rating or far above it?

Hello clydex, Yes you can use an ohmmeter, however you will need a hot air gun to. Let me explain: There are two types of Thermistors +Temperature coefficient and - Temperature coefficient. The +temperature thermistor reacts this way: as the temperature goes up so does the resistance of the device this is used when dealing with degaussing coils as the current passes through the coil it heats up the thermistor until the thermistor cuts off the current needed to run the coil. The -temperature thermistor reacts this way: as the temperature goes up the resistance decreases, this can be seen when dealing with circuits that are designed to short out when excessive current is present. The excessive current causes the thermistor to heat up and the the resistance drops causing the device to short out. Here is how to do it.: connect the device to the ohmmeter and use the heat gun to heat the component up the value of resistance should rise or decrease.

If a fuse blows like that there is a major problem, inside. I suspect that what your are seeing is the inrush thermistor, and they exhibit this under great load. I would explect that this fault maybe in the actual PSU. Due to the lack of service manual support, i would get a quote for repair from an authorised service center.

Main power button and remote will not turn on tv. It is plugged in and has 110. Worked last night but would not come on today.

The most common failure for these sets to go totally dead is the degaussing thermistor shorts out thus causing the A.C. fuse to open. The part number for the thermistor is D4DDF1R50001 and the fuse is part number XBA2A00101F... You can do a Google search for these parts. One you get the parts and look at the board where the A.C. cord connects to, the fuse and thermistor are not too far from that point. Its an easy fix if you have any soldering skills. E-5 error code

E5 code refer to fuser unit.To dfisplay both digits press the Enter.
E 52 Fusing error 1 Defective thermistor,heater lamp open,defective main or ac/dc drive board.
E 53 Fusing error 2 thermistor in shortcircuit,fusing harness shorted or ac/dc power supply board defective.
E 54 fusing error 3 main board or ac/dc board defective.
E 55 Fusing error 4 rhermistor open,defective main board or fusing lamp open.
When E5 service call condition occur for safety reasons they cannot be cleared by turn OFF/ON the power switch.After repairing the copier turn ON the main switch.Enter in the SP mode and press 97.Turn the main switch OFF wait 10 sec and turn ON.

Infotec 5221 displays a E-5 symbol

E-codes (E1-E7)are displayed im the copy counter.To display both digits of the E code press the Enter key.When service call E5 conditions occur,they cannot be cleared by turning OFF/ON the main switch for safety reasons.Ehe following procedure must be performed to clear these service call condition:
Turn ON the main switch.
Turn DIP switch 101-1 ON and OFF.

Blows fuse

If you disconnect the degaussing coil and the set plays fine, it means one of 2 things is wrong. The degaussing thermistor could be shorted internally. I have seen this happen a few times on those degaussing thermistors that are in the little black boxes with 3 legs. Those boxes actually have 2 thermistors in them, one to do the actual degaussing and another connected directly across the AC to act as a heater for the degaussing thermistor. One of those thermistors could have "flashed over", which would blow the fuse the instant the set it turned on. The only other thing would be the wrong size main fuse. Without a degaussing coil the set probably draws about one amp, but the surge at turn-on with a degaussing coil could be as high as 4 amps. If you have the correct fuse installed and it blows at turn-on, replace the degaussing thermistor.
