Re Amana BRD18vaw bottom freezer - problem is the items in freezer are covered with "frost". How do I know if that's because it might not have been closed tight enough last evening or it's something else

Unfortunatly the only real way to tell is to ensure the door gets shut tightly and keep you eyes open for any signs the freezer is not maintaining temp. Hope this helps

Frost builts up in the coils

Frost will normally build up if you do not have frost free freezer and in which case it is possible the frost free system is faulty. If it is not frost free then it has to be defrosted a few times in a month. However if the frost comes up very quickly then there are possible causes.
You may be having leakage from the door seals or there are items in the freezer that are not properly covered to avoid moisture escaping. Other possibility is that your freezer is set too cold and there are not many items in it.

2002 amana bottom freezer full of frost took food out turned off freezer now what ? ice maker never installed !

Is the thermostat set too high? Does it ever turn off?

It could be the door seals, check to see if intact, if so, could need cleaning so they seat properly.

Finally, should there be draw covers, which have been removed?

Items in freezer on top level have frost on them. It is appearing on top right side (as you face freezer). Long, "furry" frost has formed.

Frost forms on top of food in my freezer (top of refrigerator)...even inside sealed bags of items like microwave Stouffer's, etc. Sometimes up to 1/4" thick! No frost on inside of freezer though. ?????

This excess frosting can be caused by leaky door gaskets, frequent door opening, dispenser door not closing good, anywhere air can get in. Gaskets should hold a dollar bill sung all the way around both doors.

The freezer on my Amana ARB1917CB keeps frosting over; the fridge no longer cools. The advice given on most forums for this siutation is to "test the defrost timer by turning the screw with a screwdriver,"...

Exploded parts diagram for your fridge:

I understand your frustration. Below are some diagrams and troublshooting aids. If you look at the exploded parts diagram link and select the Wiring Information page, you'll see the defrost timer is on the FF harness, which is the "Fresh Food" compartment.

Next, click in the "Controls" page. Item #12 is the defrost timer. It looks like it is in light assembly / cover in the fresh food compartment as it has 2 light bulbs shown - and the freezer has only 1.

Freezer not cold enough

Sounds like a defrost problem. Check to see if there is any frost buildup in the back wall of the freezer. If so, it is not defrosting as it should.
  • possible causes:
  1. bad defrost timer
  2. bad defrost heater (in freezer)
  3. bad thermo switch in freezer
If you don’t know what these are then unplug the machine and let the ice melt in the freezer overnight with the door open. Then try it the next day, if is cooling fine then you need to have a service person replace one of the above items. If it still has a problem then it might be the compressor and you should probably replace the machine.
