This is a issue with the printer drive that windows is holding, not the printer. To Un-install your printer drive the correct way, goto add/remove programs, and un-install the printer there, then open up your printer control panel and right click where there is no printer. In the right click menu click server properties, then click the drivers tab, then remove the 1720/1720dn drivers there. A system restart will be necessary in most cases before it will let you remove the drivers(the Microsoft print spooler is to blame here for that). If this still doesn't work for you, then install a hp laserjet 4 driver and see if it does the same thing. if not, then it is something with the driver/spooler, if so, then it is the MCU of the printer, and you might want to look at buying a new printer.
I would move the printer to another computer. See if the problem follows. I have seen the issue a few times with issues in normal.dot but also in other office applications.
Problem I'm fighting with on my 1720 is its printing extra pages between pages. basically print a 5 page document and get an 8/9 page final with the extra blank pages. Think its a user error but could be machine related. going to try it on another PC and see what happens.
