I have had my HP Pavilion dv2000 laptop (HP Pavilion Entertainment PC) for just above one year now. It runs on Vista home edition. Prior to this problem it used to hang then reboots. Sometimes it hanged then came to life with a message about (display problem that the system has managed to fix). When the system decides to hang, it would either display a strip of coloured lines across the screen or a matrix of colours all over the screen. But now it does not boot at all. When I power it up, it lights up as something want to come on the screen ... and that is as far as it gets. Simply it does not show even the Vista start-up logo. Cooling fan and all the lights are working fine. Please help and advise.
It appears to be a video card/mainboard problem very common with the symptoms you have described. Try to connect the laptop to an external monitor (see the associated buttons too). No video signal on the external monitor could indicate a damaged video card/mainboard. Not worth it to be repaired and the replacement is expansive. Check the price on a professional repair store. There are new laptops on the market more powerful than yours for about 500-600$. So you can make a choice. Less common, could be a memory problem.Try the laptop with a good previously checked memory (or if there are 2 bars in your laptop, try them one by one). If you do not get any video signal on the external monitor have the laptop, first diagnostic is most probable.
In both cases, if you get a video signal on the external monitor it means your screen is defective (also expensive to be replaced).
