I get an message saying that "DEP" is closing down explorer. It happen on Pay Pal when I try to print a postal label. It also happen on all websites when I try to go to a second screen, For example when I go to the USPS site I can click on calculate shipping costs. It takes me to that screen, but when I enter my information and then click "calculate costs" I get the message that DEP has closed down IE.
DEP is Microsoft's attempt to protect against injection attacks where a program is executing from the web within web site. I have seen this error come up when using EBay's photo uploader and the USPS label printing. You can change DEP to exempt specific programs or alternately, you can disable DEP altogether. To exempt programs, you need to go in to the System properties (Control Panel-Performance), click Advanced tab and then Settings button under Performance. Click the Data Execution Prevention tab. Click the Turn on..except option and browse for the applications you want excluded. Add Internet Explorer and/or Firefox.
Turn turn off DEP:
Get to a command prompt (Start-Run: enter Command). THen type:
bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOff
(In Vista, you'll have to go into All Programs/Accesssories and right-click on Command Prompt and choose Run as Administrator. Click Allow if prompted by user account control.)
Go To Control Panel. Switch to classic view if it's in catagory view ( theres a link in the left hand side of the screen), open the SYSTEM applet (alternatively right click on MY COMPUTER and select PROPERTIES).
Click on the ADVANCED tab and then under the performance group item click on SETTINGS. Another window will open. Click on DATA EXECUTION PREVENTION (DEP). Select the radio box "TURN ON DEP FOR ALL PROGRAMS AND SERVICES EXCEPT THOSE THAT I SELECT." Add explorer to the list by clicking ADD and then browsing to C:\program files\internet explorerand selecting explorer.exe. Click APPLY and OK and then OK.
This should work.
Data Execution Prevention (DEP) is a security feature that helps prevent damage from viruses and other security threats by monitoring your programs to make sure they use system memory safely.
