If it sound like the motor is running and you get no agitate or spin but it drains, and the couple is new, then you have a bad transmission. If the washer makes a hum like the motor is jamb, then look inside the pump. If the washer make's no sound at al after fill then the lid switch in normally the problem, but secondary problems could be faulty timer or motor.

Flip control panel up, take off cabinet, remove pump off motor, remove motor, and your coupling is on the motor and gear case .

The coupling needs to be replaced, it has broken in two pieces and cannot transfer power from the transmission. That part is around 25 bucks if you have a local appliance store, sears usually has to order them. But appliance repair shops usually keep them on hand, it's a common part..

If you are referring to the motor coupling, it is actually located between the drive motor and teh gearcase. You DO NOT have to remove the wash tub in order to access and replace it. The following link explains step-by-step how to replace a motor coupling on a Whirlpool top loader:

Hi, the likely problem here is a bad coupling. Here are the directions for a bad coupling. Kenmore's, Whirlpool's and Ropers are direct drive machines this means they don't have a belt. Instead the transmission is connected directly to the motor via a coupling. This is what a coupling looks like:
To confirm this pull the machine forward enough that you can lean it back and it will stand back under it's own weight. Wedge something underneath the chassis so it does not fall on you while your accessing the bottom. Go under the Machine and locate the motor, You will see the pump connected to the motor connected to the transmission. 1. Unplug the wire harness from the motor then. 2. Use a screw driver remove the 2 clips holding the pump in place and remove or push the pump out of the way. 3. You will need to remove the 2 screws from the brackets holding the Motor in place with a nut driver. 4. With a screwdriver remove the 2 clips holding the motor in place (be careful to support the motor as the clips comes off) 5. remove the motor and drop it onto the floor. Now you will see the coupling..one side on the motor the other side on the transmission the rubber connector in between. Replace the coupling if broken or worn and reassemble the washer in reverse order. Now you should be all set. Be aware you may smell rubber on the first couple loads this is normal after replacing a coupling.

this machine doesnt use a belt, instead it uses a motor coupling part number 285753, yes easy to repair, search you tube for whirlpool washer motor coupling, easier to watch then try to explain.
