My LG microwave went completely dead. It is only 3 years old. The recommended repair service suggest just replacing the unit. Online I heard it could be a fuse problem. Where is the fuse in the model LMV1630ST?

Under the outer cover,its either a 10-15-or 20 amp ceramic safety fuse avail at most hardware stores, the amp rating is on the side of the fuse, if the new one blows then either the H.V. diode/capacitor or the magnetron can be suspects

magnetrons work only when the unit is cooking
it smells like an insulation from overheating wire so could be a fuse and failing transformer
take it in for a proper diagnosis and quote but if it is over 2 years old the cost to repair could be more than a replacement unit
The description you provide indicates the magnetron has failed, "heats food" and blown the main fuse in the microwave oven, since the unit is 10 years old it is much cheaper to replace with a new one rather than have it repaired.
I replaced outer door with key panel on my LG MICRO MODEL LMVM2055ST which solved my problem but when I went to put the handle back on it did not fit. The tophole in new panel for the handle is round and the old one is rectangle. LG says I have right part can not help me.A new handle comes rectangle shape. What now?
This happened to us 3 weeks ago with our 3 year old Kitchenaid microwave. Several hours after its last use it just shattered. In doing research I discovered that this has also happend with GE microwaves, all 3 years old. The cause seems to have been a batch of defective glass supplied by a third party. Whirlpool was very quick to cover the cost of the replacement, even though our microwave was out of warrantee.
it's less than one year old, it would be fully covered under warranty.

More common then you think, i have gone through a couple microwaves in the last ten years, they both failed very similar to what you describe. One popped the breaker one day, reset the breaker and it worked again but had an odd smell to it. I took it apart and couldn't find anything burnt or melted so i tossed it and got a new one, i didn't want a microwave burning the house down! I would suggest unless your really tied to that microwave that you just replace it for safety sake. Four years or forty years old don't matter anymore, i had one microwave, LG brand, that died two months after the warranty expired and it would cost more to repair it then replace the thing!
I'm afraid since Jenn Air has become a division of Whirlpool (along with numerous others) the quality has suffered.
I was going to suggest that you purchase a service manual for your unit so you could 'reset' it yourself. Service manuals can cost from $12-$40 US and in many cases obviate the need for 'professional' service calls.
However, I couldn't find one offered for your model number so your only choices are to continue to pay for 'service' or examine the guts visually to see if you can locate any reset feature.
This is what I would do.
When microwaves fail, older ones generally need a diode, a big capacitor or the magnetron replaced.
Newer units are suffering power supply failures as many have moved from the reliable but less efficient 'linear' power supplies to 'switched mode' types that are more efficient but more complex and prone to failure.
These later types usually have the word 'inverter' in the model description.
