We just moved in to a home with a GE spacemaker JVM1631. Today it stopped cooking. It turns on and everything seems fine but it doesn't heats up the food.

I think you should check the fuse first that runs the magnatron if the fuse is good that means the magnatron is bad! but if its only the fuse then you save time and money!
If you look at consumer affairs.com, there are many problems like this with GE microwaves. Not a good track record, experiencing problems with mine as well.
Many thanks to e3enigma above! I removed the synch motor under the turntable; all other microwave functions work fine and the grinding noise is gone, hooray! A trip to the appliance parts store tomorrow for a replacement synchronous motor and all should be well. Thanks again!
