My new 32" is connected directly to cable (no box) and set at 16:9 or any other and I have 3" of black on both sides. This is on any channel and show.

I don't know if you have landline cable or satellite but in both cases, you may not have the HD signal available unless you are paying an extra fee. HD doesn't happen in the set, it has to be available from your provider too.

Sharp Aquos 32D64U LCD HDTV. I need help connecting and/or setting up an Ematic AT103B digital converter box.

Question edited for clarity and order, 'make model (what it is)'.

On the television remote you have to select the Source or Input. Each press will take you through the HDMI ports and all other signal inputs like co-ax. Your LA channel is likely via the co-ax indoor aerial.

I have cable. The autoprogram doesn't recognize any channels. It works fine when I hook up the dvr cable box, but not when I bypass the box. Trying to do away with the box.

Cable signals today are encrypted so that it is not possible to directly connect the cable to the set and get the cable channels. You must use the cable box. Some sets have what is known as a "cablecard" slot that can be used with a card from the cable company in lieu of a cable box. Only then can you use the TV tuner for cable channels.

Picture ratio

Programs that are recorded in 16:9 format appear full screen on a 16:9 TV. A program recorded in a standard 4:3 format will either be stretched to fit the screen or have side bars to fill the screen area. In the case of HD channels, the black side bars are part of the picture which is being broadcasted.

The whole picture does not show on the screen; faces on the edge are cut off

It's one or two problems. It depends on if you're using a cable box. First try to see if your aspect ratio is on full using the JVC remote. Just Press the Aspect button. Then if it's on full and this doesn't correct the problem it may be your cable box. If it's time Warner go into the settings by pressing the settings button on the remote twice I believe tehn go to display and select the select and check each option picture size (change to normal if you have a 4:3 t.v. or stretch if you have a 16:9 (wide screen T.V.) Then go to aspect ratio and select again eih 4:3 or 16:9. If your have a hdtv cable box select output resolution and make sure there is a bulllet next to each setting for 480i, 480p, 720p and 1080i. Then exit out of the cable settings and your picture should be ok. Now if you have the hdtv package keep in mind it is normal to have the black side bars on each side of the picture only if your watching one ofthe high definition channel network that is not actual being broadcast in hdtv or recorded in hdtv.

HDTV and cable box; no volume on channels higher than 99

Can you tell me, is the set top box connected directly to the tv? (i.e. not to a surround sound receiver or anything)

No picture, blue screen

Use the TV input selector to select the right channel, that should fix it.

Aspect ratio problems on Samsung LN-S2651D Flat Panel TV

The aspect ratio (zoom) button on the cable remote had been changed. On Brighthouse the # button toggles through the zoom settings. It's not a tv issue, it's a cable fix.

You can hook up direct but you will not get hi def channels, only the standard or digital depending on your hook up.
