you can use it will be fine you plug it in a/v input on your tv theres no need of a vcr exept if you want to record what you have on the camera or you can use
a dvd burner to save it on a dvd disc...

These units are known for having bad "operation units", which consists of the switch that selects camera or vcr and the zoom unit. If you try quickly switching back and forth between cam and vcr and at least get a flash on the display, that is problem. Also, you can try slowly moving the switch (very slowly) between cam and vcr and awtaching to see if the power LED comes on at all. I have replaced many of the operation units on this unit.
