On a three wire configuration, the ground and the negative are tied together at the center position, using the dryer ground strap. Following is a description of the difference between three and four wire. Hope it helps you.
These two pictures illustrate the power wiring on a the terminal of an electric dryer. The one on top is the old-style three-wire configuration. Most people have this type in their homes. New code changes, though, require that dryers now have a four-wire cord, shown on the bottom.
Besides the number of wires in each cord, there are two important things to notice. First, in the four-wire configuration, notice that the dryer's grounding strap is folded back on itself. The whole point of the four-wire cord is to separate the ground from the neutral. The green wire (the "new" extra wire in the four-wire cord) is attached to the dryer cabinet. In the three-wire configuration, the grounding strap is left intact and the neutral and ground are tied together.

Sure hope this helps you find a resolution to your delimma! Best wishes.

On whirlpool (all manufacture) dryers the ground wire is linked to the center terminal with the white wire and attaches to the cabinet grounding all metal on dryer since on panel attaches to the next making the entire cabinet have continuty through the neutral/ground wire.
When connecting 3 wire cord connect the two outside wires to red/black on cord block and center wire to white/center terminal connection on block.
For a 4 wire cord red to red black to black white to white and the green to rear of cabinet/any panel near block

I HAVE AN OLDER MODEL KENMORE DRYER MODEL NUMBER 86872800 AND A NEWER HOME HOME WITH 4 CONNECTORS DRYER HAS ROOM FOR THREE HOW DO I CONNECT NEW CORD

You have to replace the dryer's 3-prong cord to 4-prong. Get yourself a 4-prong cord then on the terminal block at the rear of the dryer, connect the wires of the 4-prong cord to where the same wire colors (red, black, and white) of the 3-prong cord connects to. The only modification needs to be done is on the green/yellow stripe wire that connects from the white wire terminal to the dryer's cabinet. Remove this wire (green/yellow stripe) from the white wire terminal then connect it to the same wire color (green/yellow stripe) of the 4-prong cord and you are done. The new wire configuration would then be red, black, and white on the terminal block and green/yellow stripe wire on the cabinet.

Good day,
The green is screwed to any convenient place on the cabinet. It's a safety ground wire.
The white goes in the middle of the block. The red and black go on either end. Doesn't matter which.

Dryer 4 tp 3 pring cord install

Hello wgirdler,
While it is preferred to upgrade the receptacle to a 4-prong type (which includes Neutral & Ground) Code requirements grandfather in 3-prong receptacles in older homes. So if your preference is to remove and replace the power cord on your dryer, make sure you get one that is designed for a dryer application and is 10/3 type. ( 10 Gauge wire with 3 conductors)...
Unplug the original 4 prong plug from the receptacle and pull the dryer away from the wall to gain access to the back of it.
Next, loosen the cord clamp that allows the cord to pass thru the back panel and into the druer compartment.
Open the access cover to where the end of that cord is terminated on a terminal block of the dryer.
Note which color is attached to which terminal ( red to red, black to black, white to white and green to green)...
3 Prong cables do not use a ground wire ( green) in the cord so you would wire the red to red, black to black and white to white ( The red and black are the power conductors and the white ..which is normally terminated between them.. is in the middle. You can get a seperate insulated conductor wire and route it from the ground stud of the dryer to the receptacle metal casing but do this with power disabled at the circuit breaker box...
Hope this helps.

Rick

Used maytag electric dryer installation question

First off, you should be wiring your power cord directly to the terminal block inside the dryer. If someone just cut off the cord that is terminated inside the dryer, and you are attempting to splice the new cord onto the old one.. you are making a mistake.. take the new cord and bond it directly to the terminal block inside the dryer. If you have a new 4-wire power cord, you are probably dealing with a red/black/white and green wire. ( assuming it is a four prong plug).. The black and red wires are the power lines themselves and should mate with the red and black wires inside the dryer. The green ( is frame ground) and is normally bonded to a stud near the terminal block or the dryer frame. The white is the neutral line and is normally tied to the terminal in the middle and between the red and black tie points.. In line splices should not be done on this appliance.. Hope this helps..

Electric cord

What you should get is a new 4 wire cord. It is way less complicated than trying to change out the wall receptacle.
On a 4 wire dryer cord you have White(common) in the middle. Red and Black are hot and go on either side of white. If you really want to make it look good you can put red to red on the terminal and black to black but you don't have to. Some dryers may not have those color hot wires. Green hooks to the chassis with a green screw or any screw connected directly to the frame.
