It seems to be quite a common problem for all W890 owners. Mine has the same problem...........frustrating. Sony Ericsson should provide a recall or free repair through its Agents.

The msg alert tone depends on the current sound profile of your phone (like normal, silent, driving etc).
1. Go to main menu -> settings -> phone profiles. You should find all the profiles available in the phone. For example, we will change the msg alert tone for 'normal'.
2. Tap on the box with the double arrow (>>) symbol next to normal. You should enter a screen saying call alert type, voice call ringtone etc.
3. There is a drop down menu at the top right side of the screen. Tap that and select 'new messages'.
4. 'message alert type' should be melody or vibration & melody, depending on your preference.
5. now select 'message alert tone'. The phone has a number of tones already stored. Select one of these.
6. Or select 'sounds' at bottom right and browse to any file you want to set as message alert tone instead..
7. Save and exit !!

I believe that you go into settings/personal/profiles.
There you can highlight an existing profile or create a new profile.
When you highlight a profile you can select option button, then tap personalise and this with give you options to change ringtones, ring type, message alerts etc.
Hope this helps
You go to: main menu->settings->sounds & alerts (or something like that)-> vibrating alert Open this and you will find 3 choises (on,on if silent, off). Choose "ON". Then vibrating alert will be always turned ON,even if You putt it on "silent".
That is general problem with that model of phone. If you have a warranty use it, but i don't think that they will accept because you did re-instalation of software and welcome to the club of a people who also have a same problem. Sorry for that. Many people have a same problem but SE company doesn't say anything about that yet.
make sure you have the phone set to ring, it could be on silent or vibrate mode, there is also a profile that will not allow you to set ring tone, it'll always be silent, so try a different profile
