Not sure about the bars, but you can go to the settings in the main menue and try to go to roam only. It could be that you r carrier is having a problem with their tower. Your phone, normally, will try to stay on your carriers towers. If you force it to a roaming status, you might get a better signal, but on a roaming network.

Call your carrier for assistance. usually it is the last 4 digits of your phone number. However, if somebody has set a code on it... you might be able to go online to retrieve the info. I would FIRST call your carrier they may have a simple fix.
