WHERE DO I LOOK FOR A SHORT CIRCUIT ON A LEXMARK X1185 ALL-IN-ONE PRINTER?
WAS WORKING FINE UNTIL MY DAUGHTER PUT A PENNY IN IT AND AFTER SHAKING IT OUT... IT STARTED DOING THIS PROBLEM.
I PLUG IN THE POWER SUPPLY (AC ADAPTER) ...THE POWER BUTTON LIGHTS ON THEN GOES OFF IN A FEW SECONDS. NO NOISE NO MOVEMENT.I TRY TO PRESS THE POWER BUTTON AGAIN BUT IT WILL NOT COME ON.
I TOOK IT APART AND CLEANED IT (DRY RAG DUSTED BUT HAD TO WASH THE GLASS FOR THE SCANNER AND BUTTONS) THE BUTTONS MAKE CONTACT AND THE WIRES ARE CONNECTED TO THE GREEN CHIP.
i KNOW ITS NOT THE ADAPTER FOR IT WORKS WITH ANOTHER PRINTER AND IT GETS POWER TO THIS PRINTER FOR I NOTICE A RED LIGHT STAYS ON BEHIND THE CARTRIDGE PIECE, EVEN WITH THE OTHER ISSUE.
IF I MOVE THE CARTRIDGE SLOTS TO THE MIDDLE WITH THE ADAPTER NOT IN, THEY MOVE EASY..BUT WHEN I PLACE THE THE ADAPTER IN, THE SLOTS INSTANTLY MOVE TO THE SIDE AND THERE IS RESISTANCE WHEN TRYING TO MOVE THEM BACK TO THE MIDDLE AND A GRINDING/ZAPPING NOISE WITH A STRONG SMELL COMES FROM THE MOTOR ON THE LEFT CORNER..IM GUESSING CONTROLS THE CARTRIDGES MOVEMENT.
SOO IF THIS IS THE PIECES CAUSING THE PROBLEM WHAT IS IT AND WHERE CAN I GET A REPLACEMENT? AND COULD THERE BE ANYTHING ELSE CAUSING THE PROBLEM THAT SHOULD TRY FIRST TO FIX?
The encoder strip is most likely the problem. Unplug the power from the printer. Open the front cover and move the cartridge carrier to the center. You should see a white ribbon cable, a thin plastic strip and a black belt with teeth.
The thin plastic strip is the encoder strip. It rides in a sensor on the back of the cartridge carrier that you will not be able to see. Reach in with the first finger of either hand and carefully strum the strip as if playing a guitar.
The strip will need to be lowered slightly and brought towards you slightly. Please be careful not to break the strip or your printer will not function. Once you believe the strip is set correctly, plug the power back and try printing the self test.
To self-test the printer, please follow the steps given below:
1. Power the printer off.
2. Press and hold the "Paper Feed" button.
3. While still holding the "Paper Feed" button, press and release the "Power" button. Continue holding the "Paper Feed" button.
4. When the printer starts pulling paper, release the "Paper Feed" button. It should print a test page at this point.
5. Power the printer off, as this test is continuous.
The self-test should at least print out a set of either a solid black or solid color bars, if not both (if you have a printer with both color and black installed simultaneously). Should this test fail, please try it again without cartridges installed. If the self-test still fails to take paper in and make sounds like the carrier is moving across the paper, this is a hardware issue, and the printer will require service. If the self-test completes without any cartridges installed, run the self-test again with only a color cartridge installed (If you have both black and color cartridges, after this test, run the test again with just the black cartridge installed). If you find that either cartridge causes the self-test to fail, please let us know.
If the self-test prints, but has lines or smudges or other print quality issues, please let us know. This includes any print quality issues - we need to know if the problems you have with your black or color are based in the printer, or communications with your computer, or the computer's software.
If the self-test prints your test bar(s) clearly, the printer hardware is not at fault.
If it slams to the left again, the strip is not yet set correctly.
If you cannot repair the strip, please contact Lexmark tech support.
