Usually these scores only show up on sports networks (NFL Network, ESPN, CBS Sports, etc.). On DirecTV there is a button on the remote that shows the scores, but again, they are only available on sports networks. Some newer internet connected televisions have buttons on the remotes that show the scores.

Check your display size. It sounds to me like you have it set on ZOOM. On your remote there should be a button labeled PICTURE. Scroll through the setting till you see 16x9 and set it to this. Keep in mind that some commercials and programs are not filmed in widescreen so the picture will be in the 4.3 aspect ratio, "square"
hey voiolentce. if you press the # button on the cablebox remote control you can fine tune the zoom by those 20 pixels you want. you are most likely set at zoom 1 currently. thats where i was when i had this same problem and it took me days to figure out that all i needed to do was press the damn # button. i couldnt see any of the scores on espn sports games and its been driving me crazy. hope this helps!
