Sounds like the screen saver and power management are competing for the control of the LCD. I'd try the following. 1. Disable any screen saver 2. Update the system BIOS and Video driver to the most current available from support.dell.com 3. Set power management to turn off the LCD after 10 minutes and set the LCD to HIBERNATE when the LCD is closed. (Hibernate will require you to press the power button to resume windows, but your windows state will be saved to the hard drive)
The computer may have the Standby feature disabled. When you close the lid, the computer would normally go into standby, sleep, or hibernate. Is this machine running XP? If it is you can go into the power saving settings and tell the machine to not hibernate or sleep when you close the lid. You can find the settings in the advanced portion of the screensaver tab in the Display settings controls.
If you want step by step instructions, tell me what Windows your running.
Hope this helps....
You probably have a sticking hibernate, or sleep button. Near the hinge, there is a tiny pin looking thing sticking up. When you shut the computer, this presses against a switch below the case and puts the computer into sleep or hibernate mode. If this sticks, it won't boot up right. Shut the computer down and use canned air to blow out at the pin opening to clear any debris.

I'm running windows xp. I went to look at the settings and it is already at "Do Nothing" when the lid is closed. It just seems like the sleep, hibernate, or standby is just not working.
