When I close the laptop and reopen it, there is just a black screen and I can't get it to work. So I end up having to turn off the computer. Also when I go to the shut down from the start menu, the standby button is grayed out. Why is that?

I'm running windows xp. I went to look at the settings and it is already at "Do Nothing" when the lid is closed. It just seems like the sleep, hibernate, or standby is just not working.

If it is you can go into the power saving settings and tell the machine to not hibernate or sleep when you close the lid. You can find the settings in the advanced portion of the screensaver tab in the Display settings controls.

If you want step by step instructions, tell me what Windows your running.

Sounds like the screen saver and power management are competing for the control of the LCD. I'd try the following. 1. Disable any screen saver 2. Update the system BIOS and Video driver to the most current available from support.dell.com 3. Set power management to turn off the LCD after 10 minutes and set the LCD to HIBERNATE when the LCD is closed. (Hibernate will require you to press the power button to resume windows, but your windows state will be saved to the hard drive)

You probably have a sticking hibernate, or sleep button. Near the hinge, there is a tiny pin looking thing sticking up. When you shut the computer, this presses against a switch below the case and puts the computer into sleep or hibernate mode. If this sticks, it won't boot up right. Shut the computer down and use canned air to blow out at the pin opening to clear any debris.

SCREEN GOES BLACK WHILE I'M WORKING, I CLOSE THE NOTEBOOK AND REOPEN IT AND THE SCREEN REAPPEARS FOR A CERTAIN TIME

Hi,
The problem is caused due to a bad inverter cable. To fix the issue you have to reseat the inverter cable or replace the same. For which you would require specialized tools and tech knowledge. To check if the computer has no other problem apart from the LCD. You can run the dell diags on its

1. Shutdown the computer
2. Hold down the Fn key + the power button
3. The diags would get activated
Follow the screen prompts. If the screen blacks out during the tests its bad inverter cable or LCD.

Thanks

My dell C610 Screen does not come back on when i reopen the lid. I turn the computer on use it then close the lid for about a min then reopen it and the screen just stays off but the computer itself is...

Known issue. The windows default settings for power saving mode tell the computer to switch it off (sleep) when the lid is closed. The sleep mode doesn't turn completely the computer, just the visualization devices (mainly screen, also some other components not required for the computer).
What I would advise you to do after restarting the computer (press on the power button for a very long time, until you cannot hear it working), is to change the power settings.
go to control panel, choose "power options", then see if you have "choose what closing the lid does". If it's not there (not all laptops show this option), choose "change when the computer sleeps", then change " put the computer to sleep" to "never".

That should do it. if you have any questions feel free to ask me.
