Does the same thing happen if you turn it on without the remote?
If not, it's likely a short in either the remote or the sensor on the TV that receives the remote signal. A short in either would break the power on signal into two separate signals, which the TV would interpret as you hitting the power button twice, and would thus turn on and then immediately back off. If that's your problem, I'd suggest getting ahold of another remote for your set, or a universal remote that you can program for your set. There's a good chance that will fix it, and it's much easier than trying to fix the sensor.
If the same thing is happening when you use the power button on the TV, we have an entirely different problem, most likely a short somewhere. The power supply detects the short and shuts itself off to avoid doing more damage (or causing a fire). Sort of like how a circuit breaker works. That would explain it turning on and back off immediately. If that's your problem, you'll have to have someone who's handy with electronics take a meter to it and find the short. How you fix it will depend on exactly where the short is.
