I too have the horizontal gray bar problem with my GL2 camera. I tried the Radio Shack head cleaner and it has not improved the problem.I too have the horizontal gray bar problem with my GL2 camera. I tried the Radio Shack head cleaner and it has not improved the problem.

Some people say that winter storage does this.it is ,apparently,to do with moisture and the residue it causes when it dries.to all of you i recommend putting your cameras in a sun-lit window for 20 minutes a day for 3 to 5 days.if it does not work, try a tape head cleaner.

dear , i Jasdeep working in superb broadcast as an lengineer .and for this problem i can suggest u the following things : 1. Play back the cleaning tape for 10 sec. only then use it.
actually this problem occurs when the head get clogged (i.e, dirty ) it REC. only single band and shows the same in play back too.
Gray horizontal lines appears when video heads in camera got dirty / clogged. Use good quality video cleaner cassette to clean video heads, problem will resolve.
Someone here recommended on another post to put the lense cap on & videotape the blackness in a quiet room for 5-10 mins. I tried this as a last resort & it worked. When I played back the tape, no more skipping or gray lines. I had 4-5 SOLID gray lines with skipping video & audio in between on every tape I put in. I think the person who helped me solve this said that it was a result of the tape alignment going off.

Supreemwun, Canon support was of no help. They ****! To fix the problem this is what I figured out.
Before you start filming what you want record or just advance the tape 10 secs or so.
Record/ video whatever you planned.
Now when the thick grey lines come up on play back don't freak out.
Simply rewind the tape to the beginning and record briefly in the blank portion at the beginning (careful not to tape too long as to tape over your intended recording).
Rewind and play the thick grey lines should now be gone.
How did I figure this out just a fluke. No cleaning, no spray pretty simple. At first did not understand it but it works EVERYTIME for me. I'll deal with it until I get around to buying a new HD video camera and it won't be a Canon. Hope this helps.

have an A/B part to them. If A is hitting B instead of A, a line
appears. I would try the head cleaner first, then blacken your used
tape (keep lens cap on and record in a quiet room) and try that."

Hello Nick,
please purchase special mini DV tape for head cleaning. After a treatment with this tape you can check if there is an improvement with other tapes.
If you need more info please advice.

Wide bands in the playback video indicate a clogged or defective video head assembly. If your cleaning tape appears to resolve the problem, the heads are getting contaminated. I would not use the same tape in this unit. Try cleaning the heads and then use a brand new tape to avoid clogging the drum assy again.
If this does not resolve the problem, the drum assembly will have to be replaced.
Hope this helps.
