Whistling background noise with Samson C01U USB condenser mic

I am recording a podcast in Garageband on iMac OSX leopard. Recording with the internal mic is fine, no problems just rubbish quality.
Bought a Samson C01U USB condenser mic and installed the soft pre application. Problem is that when i set the input volume high enough to pick up the voice at a decent volume there is a very loud constant whistling noise
50% - 75% in system prefs
+ 1 - 30dB in Soft pre
70% in Garageband recording level
I tried changing the USB cable - same noise

same problem using the mic for skype conversations
same problem when tested on a pc as a skype microphone

any help or tips greatly appreciated - even if it is a stab in the dark - it is doing my head right in

thanks for taking the time to respond but surely the point of having a usb microphone is to negate the need for a proper studio for hobby projects. There are no local speakers feeding back into the microphone - the monitor on garage band is off and the problem remains if I plug in headphones or mute the master output volume...

Any other ideas or help greatly appreciated thanks

Does it reduce if you turn down the gain? It's a close mic, so you are supposed to be only a few inches away from it when you talk.

Welcome to the world of STUDIO microphones. Super quality BUT you must have a studio to use them. You can't have any local speaker playing into them. You often use headphones lest your monitor speakers will feedback. At the high frequency capability of these mics, you can fry your amps with oscillations above what you can hear!

Why is it suddenly way too quiet?

Try a different mic to see if problem follows. If yes then it is a setting. If not then the mic is bad and needs to be sent to mfg or get a new one.

My samson microphone c01u works but i cant hear my mic thru my speakers it does not record out

That's normal. You're supposed to record a track and then play it back. In order to hear it live you would need to enable "software playthrough" in your recording software, but there will be a delay, so it probably won't be much use.

1. Try the microphone on another USB port and check.
2. If not OK, try the microphone on another computer and check.
3. If OK on another computer, re-install it or recover the O.S. from a backup.
4. If on another computer the same problem exists, the microphone could have a internal control defect.

C01u PROBLEM PLS HELP ?!

That's the way it's supposed to work. It's a mono microphone, so there's only one signal to record.

Set up your recording software so that it only records the Left channel. It describes how to do this on the Samson FAQ page and in the Owner's Manual:

"In your digital audio workstation (DAW), create a mono audio track, and set it to the Left channel of the C01U (the Right channel should be ignored). Arm the track for recording, and adjust the input gain by using the software control in your computer's operating system"

Don't try to alter the pan so both sides are the same; that will just screw up the levels and noise.

Sound quality not good at all

open up the sound icon on control panel...select recording......select samson mic....make sure set to default.....go into properties ...and boost main volume slider....most mics after install are set quite low and you have to go in and adjust the vol input level

Switched from a g4 PowerPC to a g5 Intel Imac and now Mic has a lot of digital hiss

the Samson C01U picks up the noises running inside the computer, or laptop whichever you have. You can't change that. But if you want to get rid of it. I use Cool Edit Pro. There's this effect we have for Noise Reduction. I won't go further on unless you have this program, or something similar. But basically it takes out any unwanted static

No recording?

The static after several seconds seems like this is a problem with certain versions of OS X. You might be able to fix it by downgrading or upgrading. Apple Forums say that it's fixed in 10.5.6.

You can double check that this is the problem by trying it on a Windows computer.

Playback only on left speaker

The quick, easy solution is to change your microphone to mono recording. In the attached YouTube clip, I'll show you how to do that.

The short and simple is to go to your Mac HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Audio MIDI Setup. Select your C01U USB device, and set it to 1ch 16bit. This will set the microphone to record in mono, equally over both speakers.
