Hello

I don't know what exactly what you mean by protect. But i can tell you how share your device without giving permittion to people to write on your drive.
This means that you cannot get a virus, people cannot copy to your drive, but they can still copy from you.
Here is how you do this:
Go to my computer
Right click on the drive you are sharing
Click on properties
Click on the sharing tab
Advanced sharing
Your drive is already shared so just click on permissions
then you can choose what the permissions you want to have in the drive by just clicking the box. Hope this is what you are looking for.

Best regards

Trying to media share a laptop with Windows 7 to a desktop with Windows XP. Laptop is getting the desktops files, but the desktop will not open laptop files (Media Player specifically). Upgraded desktop...

If your files are in "My Music" and the "My Documents" is not shared, then nobody can view them from another PC. Try copying the files to your shared files directory and see if you can access them then.

I'd like to use my mini notebook as an external hard drive for my desktop computer. How would I do that?

Not a good idea.
You can set a kind of Shared Folders, but only using Windows XP Professional and access it via LAN.

Printernot shared on my xp desktop to vista lap top

Need more information...
  1. Is this a new laptop?
  2. What version of Vista are you using?
  3. What type of network are you attaching to?

In actuality, a move from XP Professional to Vista Home for example is, from a licensing perspective, a down-grade. Microsoft in their supreme wisdom have removed many of the file sharing features from all "Home" editions of XP and Vista which will prevent you from attaching to printers and devices operating on a domain or even certain workgroups. If this is a new OEM laptop, you may need to pay several hundred dollars to upgrade to Business Ed. or Ultimate Vista. Which will add back the features XP Professional gave you for free.

Here is the article on the MS website

Hi, I am so confused about getting security on my laptop.. i have a belkin N wireless router and a comcast cable modem.. My brother had told me to unplug the ethernet cord that was connecting my belkin...

set your laptop firewall if you are using windows xp, in this case there would be an increase security, and no one can access your file unless it is shared in the network, if you have a shared folder or documents right click the folder and properties and set the security there to allow no one to access the file except for the person you nominated to access you folder. Windows XP firewall can set your security in the way it is protecting your files.

Windows Vista home + Windows XP Professional Networking issue

Make sure domain settings to your server are correct on the notebook computer. These settings are located in the control panel of the system setting.

Whats the operating system of your server?

Make sure the firewall in windows security is turned off too. Sometimes that thing sneaks up on you.

I haven't used the home edition of Vista but another reason why it might not be working is because it isn't the business version. Microsoft might have added extra security to prevent the home version from connecting to a server. I know we use the business version of Vista at work and it is working that way on the intranet server without a problem.

I would check with Microsofts website on that.

Trying to network xp pc to wireless laptop

Right click on the drive you want to share. Ex: C:\Vol-xx = name. In the pop up window click Sharing & Security. This needs done to all the drives you want access too. To share a printer. Everyone must have the printer drivers installed. The Pc that has a direct connection to the printer must also Share the printer on the network. Open Printer & Faxes, highlight the printer you want to share. Click File than click Sharing follow windows instructions.
Small suggestion regards to the wireless side of the network. Suggest you setup security so others close too you can not tap into your network. (common).
