Downgrading from a newer OS to an older OS is always the problem in finding the correct drivers for your hardware.

In order for Fixya to help, kindly let us know your PC model and we will try to locate the generic drivers needed for your hardware.

Can you upgrade a vgn sz480 to windows 7 professional

Your laptop would be a wonderful candidate for Windows 7. Sony is doing a great job with driver updates and most things should work 100% right out of the box. If you have Vista, you can choose the upgrade version. If you have XP, you will need to do a clean install, Windows 7 will save your personal files and old windows installation on the "C" drive and will list it as windows.old, I would suggest though that you back up every file you want on an external drive before you start.

Memory card reader on new VGN-SZ480 doesn't work

Yes it is really plug into slot and use but it won't work at all if you won't install drivers. So please go to Sony's website and choose your model there and then download n install drivers. Thats it. Simple or not ?
