I want to be able to transfer pictures from my camera(Sony Cyber-shot, 3.2 mega pixels, model DSC-P52) to my computer, believe I need the drivers????????????

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program, such as iPhoto on Mac or Windows Photo Gallery or Picasa ( http://picasa.google.com ) on Windows.

Cybershot DSC-P52

http://www.nodevice.com/user_manual/sony/cameras2/dsc-p52.html

This site will take you to a free download location for a PDF version of your user manual for this camera. On page 60 it gives details on how to set up the "special effects" for b&w picture taking.

In Summary:

1.Set the mode selector to the "Camera" icon.

2. Press "Menu"

3. Select [PFX] (P. Effect) with the horizontal arrows

4. Select the type of effect with the vertical arrows

5. To cancel the picture effect in #3, select "off"

I hope this helps!

DOWNLOADING PICTURES

Photo transfer problems are as likely to be related to software as to hardware. If you use photo-editing software other than what came with your camera, check the software's documentation and Web site to see if the manufacturer supports your camera. Download and install any software updates, as well.

If your photo-editing software can't detect your camera, make sure your camera is attached, turned on, and, if necessary, switched to transfer mode. Double-click the My Computer icon and look for an icon that corresponds to your camera. If you see an icon for your camera, you know that Windows detects your camera and that the problem is related to your photo-editing software.

Sony DSC-P52

Take a picture with the camera and download it to your computer. If the picture also shows up black, then this sounds like it might be a defective CCD imager. If so, Sony should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check the following link for more info:

Sony DSC P52 and Windows XP

I could be wrong, but I don't believe that it can be - though I have never tried - this is only a guess. Most cameras today, rather than being recognized as imaging devices by windows - are simply recognized as a mass storage device - the same as a pen drive or external hard drive. This has many advantages - but one disadvantage is the one that you mention. Are you using the Sony Software? Perhaps a driver installed from their imaging software will allow the computer to recognize the camera as an imaging device? Other than that, I can't think of anything else.
