I just installed my new WD My passport Elite and then accidently uninstalled it. Is there something I can download to fix this. When I attach hthe portable hard drive I do not get any instructions as to what to do now.

you may have a FAT32/NTFS format problem between your wd500 and your pc. or differently formatted partitions. right click on their device letters on 'my computer' and look at 'properties'. should tell you how they're formatted and # of partitions, etc.
just a guess!
good luck!

may need to plug it in to a better outlet if you that option, worked for me. for a 500 GB external hd. i couldnt figure out why it only worked on occasion and on certain pc's and it all had to do with it not recieving enough energy.

Hi,
U need to update windows XP , USB drivers will be installed

Usually what has happened here is the usb interface has failed. The little hard drive with all your data is perfectly fine but the interface can no longer talk to the computer.
There are a couple of fixes. One is to send it in to WD who may or may not preserve your data. You can buy another passport and take the drive out and put it into the new drives enclosure. And third which is the way I've been fixing these is to go buy a usb drive enclosure. These start at $15 and up. Then you just take the drive out of your passport, plug it into the enclosure and you are back up and running.
This type of failure is common to all manufacturers.
The enclosure swap is something you can do yourself. The hardest bit is actually opening the case on the passport. Any computer shop should be able to do it for about $40 or less.
