Plays games but not DVDs

My girlfriend's PS2 Slimline always works when I put in a game, but it doesn't work when I put in a DVD. I have cleaned the lens and the entire inside of the console with alcohol and q tips. I haven't taken it apart, but it should be pretty clean inside. Does anyone know how to get the DVDs working? Thanks

I was trying to play some Seinfeld DVDs, which I'm sure were made in America, which is where I live. Plus, I was playing a video game that was made in Japan, and it worked fine. So I'm not sure what to do at this point.

My PS2 will play only some DVD movies fine. It does the same with PS2 games. Seems like they have removed something that the older, larger PS2s had that allowed them to read DVDs more deeply and play...

Hi there Mike,

The only possible reason for your problem, since your slimline ps2 is STILL reading them (but just a little slow sometimes), is because the lens could hardly read your discs due to dust build up. Try cleaning it using a disc cleaner and letting it spin for like 30 seconds. If this does not fix the issue, then you may have to MANUALLY clean the lens. Open the cover and once you see the lens, get a clean swab or qtip and damp it in an alcohol and gently wipe the lens in a circular manner. Then let it dry and try to play those discs again.

Please let me know how this goes. Thank you for using FixYa.

My slimline ps2 will not play ps2 games anymore, i went and played a ps1 game (which still work) and no it wont play DVDs or ps2 games

Mine did the same thing. The laser for the PS2 games, and DVD's died. I guarentee that it plays CD's and PS1 games perfectly. if so, the laser needs replaced. and what you have to do is order one on Ebay or something, and have some one put it in. I put a new laser in mine, and well, I am watching a DVD on it right now.

PS3 80g only plays DVDs and PS2 games .... help

The reason why DVDS still work and the blu-rays don't is because it's a three part laser. dvd / cd / blu-ray.

The blu-ray portion almost always goes out first.

PS2 slim

the laser is dirty or damaged. Try swabbing the lens with rubbing alcohol and immediately drying with canned air. if that doesn't work, a repair shop can do a more in depth cleaning, but there is the chance that the DVD portion may never work again. I do this repair about 5 times a day...

My PS2 Slim plays music, black and blue discs, but doesn't play silver discs nor DVDs.

Is this a new problem or has your PS2 always had this issue? You cannot adjust the laser at all and are likely to damage it if you try, you can however clean the laser lens with a CD/DVD cleaning disk and you'd be surprised how often this resolves disk read issues. Some of these units did have a production fault that prevented them from reading DVD's, if your PS2 has had this fault since new and/or is under 12 months old you could probably have had it repaired/replaced by Sony but by opening it you will have invalidated you're warranty.
