Cannot power on Seagate Freeagent Desk external hard drive

I have a Seagate Freeagent 500G hard drive and I just found I cannot power on it. I have tried many times. At the beginning, for one or two times when I plugged it in the light was on and the it started tuning, but just for one second. Later, no matter what I do, no light, no tuning, no any responses. I can send it to Seagate, but am afraid of lose the data in it. So anyone can tell me a simpler and safer solution?

Hi,

Hope this has only been used for backups, and not as a primary storage. The best way to trouble shoot something like this is to purchase a USB/SATA adapter. You will need to dissemble the device and take out the hard drive. Connect it to the USB/SATA adapter to see if the drive spins up and can be seen by the PC. This will let you know if the drive is OK and whether the fault is related to the external bay electrices or the drive itself.

Good luck, you can get the USB/SATA devices quite cheap off of eBay.

Cheers,
Ripface.

Why does my Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex, 1.5 TB, external hard drive USB 2.0 make a clicking sound and will not connect to my Satellite receiver?

Does the drive work with a computer? This is an important test to determine if the drive is bad, or if it is an interface problem. Check the satellite receiver instructions for using external USB devices. Many times, these types of devices do not have interfaces with drivers for external hard drives.

How do i fix an external hard drive (seagate freeagent) that makes a beeping sound and is not recognized by my system ?

Look inside your P.C. 1st to check SATA data connection type.
eSATA is a different connection from SATA so you might need an eSATA data lead if you follow the guide in the link, not sure if it just external connections only and plain SATA connection inside.
Google image 'eSATA' data lead/cable and you will see the difference between the eSATA and SATA connection if you don't already know.
