Try re-seating the the LCD video cable connection under the keyboard, it may have come loose.
run the LCD BIST Test by pressing D + the Power button, you should get 4 solid color screens. If no go, then the LCD has failed

HI, If you Are writing numbers instead of letters when you press the
keyboard of your laptop and you must hold down the Function key (Fn) to
write normally.
This is due to the fact that the digital lock is activated. To solve
this, simply press the Fn+Numlk or depending of the model, press the
button or Fn + Shift +Numlk

My curser keeps jumping around when I am trying to type a letter, or email. I have a feeling it is my keyboard, so I have a new keyboard for my Vostro 1520, I took all the screws out in the back, but cannot figure out how to open up my laptop, so I can install my new keyboard. Start the computer and go into Safe Mode by pressing the F8 key repeatedly when you see the Dell splash screen. Select Safe Mode at the top of the list. When SM is fully loaded, you will see a windows telling you that you are in SM. There will be two buttons at the bottom of the window. Click the right button to do a system restore. Choose a date just before the mishap with the external keypad. It will restore the computer to how it was at that time and restart Windows.
