If you are sure that you have installed the correct driver, device manager shows the audio, then there may be something wrong with the audio section of your desk top.

Try throwing in a different, known working, audio board and driver and see what happens.

Have 2 lap tops,1 desk top. Desk top and 1 lap
For the 2nd laptop, first upgrade the LAN card driver, then reinstall the driver if the problem is not resolved with the driver upgrade.
