Help Please. I'm not to bright when it comes to computers or laptops. But need to know how to lighten the screen on a Gateway laptop, it's to dark to see. Can you help. Thanks Becky

Have you tried using the F2 button?

Else go to system settings > displays, there you can adjust brightness as well.
Also you can switch off the auto brightness there.

There should be brightness controls on the keyboard (looks like a sun). Do you have these? Sometimes you need to press a Fn key to access them

If it's due to the display settings on your computer, please do this-

Keep on holding down the function key(Fn - probably second key from bottom left) on the laptop and then press F10 key till you get the screen to become brighter.

Please let me know if it works, otherwise, we will have to gothrough a series of steps to resolve it.

this is not a computer problem you have to press the buttons on your monitor that is a menu when the menu comes up change the brightness

Look on the function keys for a delicate blue description ... press the fN key and the brightness increase key.

I doubt you accidently unplugged the screen ... but dont discount that totally.

Try using the FN key and the up arrow at the same time while tapping the up arrow, also make sure that if you have vista, you are not in "power saver mode". if there is no light at all coming from your screen, you may have a bad display bulb, this could also be a faulty invertor, but you would have noticed a constant flicker.

You could have a defective screen - a defective inverter or a CCFL lamp.
To determine if you have a LCD screen or video card problem, read this and follow the instructions.

Defective CCFL backlight, it may have the following symptom:

• Screen flashs on red/pink and off.
• Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal.
• Picture flickering with dim display or appear black.
• Picture flickering on and off.

All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp) has reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replacing the CCFL lamp

Connect an external monitor to your laptop and power it up, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight.

Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight and it could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out or burnt out, most likely this is the case.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.

To change the lcd brightness, press Fn key and the up and down arrow key's at the lower right of the keyboard.

looks like your gonna need a new screen ( MAYBE )
may just be a loose or broken wire.
before it gets any worse take it to a small repair shop they'll charge you less then a major outlet.
Most will tell you on the spot at no cost if you need a new screen or not.
and yes the screen can be expensive
