that kind of happened to me, except there were gray horizontal bars going across my screen. I could only see half of what I was watching. Turns out, I just kept playing the tape and they magically went away. crazy but true. Now the only thing I need help with is getting the tape in it, as the camera won't take any tapes.
It sounds like your saying the gray lines are appearing on your camera and on the tv when you play from the camera but not on your brothers camera. It sounds like your heads are dirty. Get a head cleaner and you should be good to go. Please take a moment to rate my solution fixya. Thanks and enjoy, Lee
Someone here recommended on another post to put the lense cap on &
videotape the blackness in a quiet room for 5-10 mins. I tried this as
a last resort & it worked. When I played back the tape, no more
skipping or gray lines. I had 4-5 SOLID gray lines with skipping video
& audio in between on every tape I put in. I think the person who
helped me solve this said that it was a result of the tape alignment
going off.
I emailed my problem to Canon and this is what they sent me.
"As a first step towards resolving your issue, we suggest that you restore the camera's default settings. You can reset all of the menu and button operation settings to default except for Date/Time, Language, and Video System. To reset these settings, please follow these steps:
1. Please remove the AC adapter and main battery. 2. Please remove the backup battery. It is located behind the main battery. 3. Please turn the POWER SWITCH to camera, then to PLAY/VCR. 4. Then please turn the camera off for approximately 1 minute. 5. Please use a clean pencil eraser to rub the contacts inside the battery compartment and on the battery. 6. Put both batteries back on the camera. 7. Connect the camcorder to AC adapter. 8. Clean the tape compartment with a dry tape head cleaner.
If the error is not cleared, we recommend you please send the camcorder in for service."
You might have to do it twice and put a tape to try and record before it works perfectly. It worked for me so hopefully it works for you.

What do you mean by "Its only when i go to record or view previous recording"? in what situation doesn't it show the gray lines?
What about the viewfinder? do you get lines there aswell?
If you don't see the gray lines when you transfer the video out of the camera, then you don't have a head problem, a screen problem maybe. Don't hurry to use cleaner tapes because they can hurt the head, the actual cleaning procedure is one that scrapes the head and leaves some damage.
