Dell dimension 5150 boot up difficulties - just goes to the Dell screen and then nothing - a little blinking white dash in the upper left corner. I usually hit f12 to boot from there, but it seems that this issue which used to happen very infrequently is now happening nearly every time I boot up. What gives?/

Try to run diags, press f12 when booting the choose utility partiton. check for any error on your HDD but it seems like its an OS issue so all you need to do is to uninstall and reinstall your OS

Yes, this sounds like the traditional black screen issue, but it's
different! This machine is a Dell Dimension 3000 with XP. System won't
boot. After Blue Dell BIOS splash screen with F2 & F12 options, it
just goes black. There will ultimately be a white cursor in the upper
left hand corner. I can edit BIOS with F2, I can get in to the boot
menu with F12, but I can't do anything after that. I can even get in to
the Safe Mode menu (F8), but it never boots.
Main cause of the problem is a corrupted operating system which can be cause by a virus or a defective hard disk or a defective memory module. First to try is to replace your memory with a certified good one. If the problem persists, Try to reinstall you windows using your CDRom. If there still the problem, replace hard disk.
you might have deleted/corrupted some of your boot files so you might want to restore your default to be able to retrieve your old booth. then try fixing it from there.
