Question about GE Cooktops

1 Answer

We ordered a GE gas cooktop 2 burner module to replace the grill on the lefthand side of a cooktop we inherited (model JGP389WEVWW). The gas cooktop only had 2 burners with a grill, and since we want 4 burners, we called the GE Parts department to check on availablity of the 2 burner module. They said it was available and we ordered it. Since it was on backorder we went ahead and converted our electric cooktop to gas, after receiving confirmation from GE that the new gas module would be sent. GE sent part# JXGB79W which is supposedly the correct part number for our cooktop, however this part supercedes the former part# JXGB89W. The problem is, the new part number does not fit into the cooktop--the striker is in the wrong position. So although we ordered the cooktop, and had our electric cooktop converted to gas based on the information we were given, the new part does not fit. It took over 3 hours on the phone with GE today to discover that the new part number superceding the old won't work. I have looked online for the correct new part, checked Craig's List and Ebay, and I just can't find JXGB89W. It is appalling to me that GE didn't warn me that this superceded part may not fit our appliance -- we converted to gas before receiving the part from GE, which apparently was a huge error in judgment. I spoke with Customer Relations, the Parts Department, Credit and Returns, The GE Answer Center, and the process was a complete fiasco -- it was exceedingly difficult to get to the right people and try and negociate which direction I should go. It was a lady in Credit and Returns who was able to finally explain to me that a part that supercedes an old part may or may not fit! It is truly unconscionable to me how GE could allow people to order parts without warning them first that the part might not work. Why wasn't I forewarned? Had I known this may occur, I would not have ordered the 2 burner module. Are there any options available? I am so darn mad I cannot even see straight... Thanks for any help you can offer.

How do I replace spark ignitor on GE JGP963SEF1SS gas cooktop?

If none of your burners are igniting, you need a new Spark Module. If only 1 or 2 of your burners are not igniting, you may need a Spark Igniter. Click on the pictures below for a larger image.

The Spark Module is number 318 in the following diagram (underneath the burners):

The Spark Igniter is number 154 in the following diagram:

My GE Gas cooktop model # JGP975EKSS is trying to ignite without any burners being turned on.

If all the burners are trying to ignite at the same time - the ignitor module is to blame.
If it is one specific burner - take a look at that individual knob.

Have a four burner gas GE Profile cooktop. How do

The igniter module is working fine. One of the switches (which are on each valve shaft) is stuck or shorted out. Pull a wire off each one at a time to determine which one is bad. Careful! 120 volts to each wire. Also, this can happen after you spill water into the valve area, if that sounds right, let it dry out.

Should I buy a two burner unit if available? Or a new cooktop?

Yes you can as long as there ae two heat controls for the grill side of the stove/cooktop. That allows one burner control for each of the burners. You should be able to order directly from GE but I would also check out repairclinic.com since they normally sell OEM GE parts cheaper than you can buy them from GE. At least check out the price at both sources beforw purchasing.

I have a GE model jgp940 gas cooktop one of the four burner electrodes will not spark.

You have to determine if it is the electrode or the ignitor module and replace the component. A simple test is to swap the wires on the spark module for the non working one and see if the other electrode still works. If not the electrode is bad, if it does than the module is bad.

The igniter on the right front burner of my GE Gas cooktop does not work....I must use a lighter or match to ignite....What can I do? There is no clicking sound when I turn on the burner?

the very first thing i would do here is to check the ignitor itself
under the head cap you should see two screws, once those are out you will be able to lift the burner plate, lift the burner plate, you will see, or should see the ignitor, and the wire.
i check this for voltage by unplugging the ignitor and olding the wire close to a ground, the metal body is good. Turn on the ignitor, becareful it is live. yhou shgould see a spark comming from the wire
if not check to make sure that wire is in position and on the spark module
if you do see a spark this way, just order the replacement ignitor
and install it when it arrives

GE Cooktop burner doesn't click or light.

Remove all the burner heads and lift the top. Sometimes easier said than done. How do you know it is the module? It could be a cracked insulator on the ignitor. To verify you can swap two of the connections on the module and if it lights then it is the module.

Exhaust turns on automatically in burner mode

Hello
I have the one with the 4 burners and the grill, and when the grill in on the fan has to come on, and it does automaticly, but once you finish with the grill you have to change it back to stove mode by putting the 2 burners back or the fan will allways go on when you turn the switch. It is a safety regulation for the fan to be on with the grill to avoid the fumes......I know I hate that too.
Hope this help

Jenn-Air 30 in. JGD8130 Gas Cooktop

Yes. Buy a burner module. Sears sells them also most appliance part stores. (I am assuming you have the model with 2 knobs on the grill side) The electric version of burner modules is around $100 Gas should be similar price.

It is not a GE but it is a Jenn-air

It's either a bad spark module or switch.
