The E40 error code indicates a loss of electrical power usually but not always due to the door not shutting properly or not locking. But, since you smelled burning it could be any electrical short that blew a fuse and shut the machine down. It could also be the motor windings with the internal overload protector shutting it down.

With AEG washers E40 means defective door lock. Since a faulty door lock switch may go
out with vibration you often do not get the error all the time. The door
lock switch must be tested and eventually replaced. Call the AEG number listed in the user manual if you want to get in touch with an authorized technician or if you need replacement parts for your washing machine.
Hello,
Count the number of green flashes(1st number of error code). count number of red flashes(2nd number of error code).
Common codes are:
E10 or 11 water pressure faults.
E20 filter/pump faults.
E30 pressure switch/heater faults.
E40 door switch faults.
E50 motor faults.
E60 Heater faults.
These are some of the error codes but there are many variations on some codes depending on the model.Hpoe this has been some help.
having the same problem found in side a small black hose with a small hole in it but have no idea what this hose is for. may be it is connected to some water sensor.
I had a variety of error codes show up on my duet, and I'm not sure but I seem to recall a 31, but the most constant was 02. I took off the front cover, pulled the white plug out from the unit, put a bucket under it, unscrewed it and drained it. It may be the MCU is having problems because the washer got plugged up.
If you open the top of the washer , there is a "tech" sheet in there to tell you how to reset the error codes.
My washer started this. Then stopped spinning. Now it will not even wash a load. It stops mid-cycle. The ER 20 means that something is not draining right. We checked all of the tubes leading to the pump. Nothing was clogged. The technition seems to think it is a motor controller error.
