I lost the cable needed to upload pictures to the computer from the camera that are loaded on the camera's terminal drive. Where can I purchase a new one? I went to Best Buy where the camera was purchased, but they didn't have the cable available for purchase and indicated I'd have to go to Nikon.com, which isn't a big help either.

Personally I wouldn't be using the camera software if it's deleting images without the command to do so.
What you can do is purchase a card reader with multiple memory card ports that way when you do get another camera the reader will have the port for the memory card.
Anyway the reader plugs into a USB port on your computer and looks at the reader as an external hard drive (Mass storage device) Depending on your operating system you should have an application called "My Documents" Open a new folder I generally use the date and img. then insert the memory card into the reader and the computer will either bring it up on the desk top as a hard drive or you may need to co fetch it in "My Computer" (I don't know your system) once that's done you can open the picture files copy and paste them into the new folder. Then you just need to open your camera software program and click on open and go to that file.
Once you have your pictures secured on the computer Hard Drive then format the memory card.
Formatting clears all the surface and makes the memory card ready to accept new picture data.
I suspect you have been deleting pictures and deleting pictures again and again well, you should be formatting after each time you download the pictures to the computer.
I know that will solve the problem and you can use the same system when you get a new camera
There must be some type of program incompatibility, I feel your frustrations. Generally these programs load in about five minutes tops unless you are using a PC that's more then five years old or working with Windows 95. If you are working with a PC and Windows XP or newer then there should be no problem unless you have run out of available Hard Drive memory or the ram is full which I doubt. Do you have pictures on a memory card in the camera? If so and you are working with XP turn off the camera off, plug the USB cable into the PC and then the camera make sure no other program is working and turn on the camera make sure you have sufficient power in the camera. A little banner may appear saying found new device and then load the picture files as a folder to the desk top or may need to look into systems to find the folder it should show as an external device or hard drive. in that folder is your pictures. Make a folder in your "My Documents" and then you can copy past the pictures files into the new folder. Once on the computer Hard Drive do a safely disconnect device and remove the USB cable from the computer and camera then format the camera Memory Card. The pictures in the new file you created on the computer can be opened in a program called "Paint". That'll get you going until you either get the camera programing installed or purchase a real Image program like Adoby PhotoShop Elements or larger but Elements is great for a beginner heck I still use it when I want frames and stuff. There is no driver or software needed to upload the pictures. Simply
connect the provided usb cable to the camera and computer. Then locate
the "computer" tab on your computer and find the removable drive's
section. The pictures may be in your G or F drive. Open the folder and
you will see the picture files. You can copy or cut and paste them
where ever you like. If you cannot find the provided usb cable, you can
purchase it by visiting http://service.mattel.com/us/.

You can plug in your camera's cable into the usb port of your computer. Turn on the camera so that the system will detect it. Now, open your Windows Explorer by right clicking your start button and click Explore. Look for the drive associated with your camera and click it to show the contents to the right. You just have to look for the folder that contains those pictures and copy them to your computer's local drive. That's it!

It sounds like you don't have software on your PC that will recognize the camera when connected. I am going to recommend that you do not use the camera to upload photos. It is better practice to use external (SD) memory cards and remove them from the camera to upload. You can use a USB SD reader or purchase SD cards with a built-in USB interface. You should be able to see a new drive when connecting the SD card to your computer; then all you need to do is copy over the images. One advantage is that you will save camera battery while uploading because you dont need the camera at all. It also allows you to take images with you without taking the camera, i.e. school or work. I hope this helps...californiajones
If you have an XP Computer no software needed
In fact it would have been best left in the box.
Just plug the camera to the computer.
Set the upload control
Switch camera on
And in my computer the camera will show as new removable drive
Or a window will come up asking 'what the heck do I do with these pictures- and you click 'Send to folder
