Question about Olympus Stylus 770 SW Digital Camera
My wife an I purchased an Olympus Stylus 770 SW for our son as a High School graduation present 1 1/2 years ago. About a month ago he said that his camera quit working so I asked him to bring it home on Christmas break. It had the same symptoms as the other posts in this section...
Solution; take a very small screw driver (blade about 1/32" wide) and push the lens cover down into the body of the camera to the fully open position. => As soon as the lens cover was in the fully open position the camera came on and the was ready to take a picture!
This just happened yesterday so not sure how long it will work. Give it a try before opening it up or sending it off to Olympus.

I had an Olympus 725 which I bought in Dec 06, this xmas I went home to see my family in Ireland (I live in Australia) and stopped in Thailand on the way back, the camera broke when I was snorkeling, 4 days out of Warranty!!!! Same issues as you guys had. When I got back on the 16th Jan I brought it back to the shop, the guy told me my best bet would be to get onto Olympus directly and explain the situation. I did and they told me to send it in. I wrote a letter of complaint and sent it in with the camera (I also had problems with my XD corrupting itself, and I lost a lot of pic's). Yesterday when I came in from work there was note in my letterbox from Australia airmail saying they had tried to deliver a package to me but there was nobody home. Just found out awhile ago it's a new camera, a 795:) so I'm well happy. Will buy an extended warranty aswell tho, just in case. Sooo my advice is to deal directly with Olympus and not with any shops or agents.

My camera is doing the same thing and we did not have it in the water. lens is stuck open and screen goes blank when I want to take a picture, however it will let me view pictures already made. This happened while my 4yr old was playing with it. so im not sure what he did but I dont think it was anything extreme. I agree... olympus promotes its durability... so what wrong??
ok update on what happened with my olympus. i had to send it to the customer service centre after failed attempts to try and fix it myself.apparently the service repairman said that there was a faulty in the lens and and that i had to replace the lens.cost me bout 200 malaysian ringgit.it was very irritating as i only had that camera for bout a year plus and it did say we could take pictures in the water! the people at the service centre werent very helpful in a sense that they didnt give me a straight answer as to what caused the lens faulty and i did ask them if it was because i brought it into the water but they said it had nothing to do with that! wouldnt reccomend anyone bringing theyre olympus 770 into the water now because it seems like the product is not living up to its name.
I had the same problem, my camera fell off a small night stand, approx 2 1/2 ft high, and stopped functioning with the lens cover open. I took it all apart and tried to fix it to no avail. The camera didnt work for the entire week long duration of my trip despite repeated attempts to fix it. Then, on the plane ride home, it suddenly turned on again and is now working fine. I still emailed customer service to see if it could get repaired so that doesn't happen again but it's been two weeks and no reply yet. Any help??
to amkamk, prior to my problem of the stuck lens, i had also brought the camera into the ocean and when i came home to download the pictures i found some moisture on the lcd screen too.all my pictures turned funny with this dark area where all the water was collecting.after a couple of days it turned out ok because i think the moisture evaporated gradually.if u read the manual it says that after swimming with the camera you should submerge the camera in clear tap water for a few minutes and press the on off button repeatedly.this method is supposed to get rid of any residue and dirt that might cause the lens to stick.its so frustrating bcoz i had bought the camera for its durability and because it had said that it was waterprof and all these other gimmicks and now i end up having to pay bout 300 bucks for something that shouldnt be happening!
I have had the same problem- I bought this camera to go to Mauritius with to snorkle, which it is supposed to be able to do. After being in the water the lens had moisture in it and the lens seemed to be sticking. My husband rinsed the camera when we got back to the hotel to get the salty water off.
Two months later we went to UK?Europe for XMAS- Just got to the Eiffel Tower in Paris and the lens stuck open and the camera would not work.So I had to buy a disposable camera at the top of the Eiffel Tower- Not Happy!
It did not work again and so because wewere in the middle of our holidays we couldn't send it in for warranty work and no-one in the Uk could look at it so we had no option but to buy another digital camera ( Fuji). When we came home to Australia I took it to get repaired and was told by the sales assistant in the camera shop where i bought it- "Maybe you should not go to the beach with it because the sand might get into it". This camera has settings for the beach and underwater doesn't it????????
Then this weekend we went to meet family we had not seen in 35 years from Perth to Gold Coast (Australia) and guess what the the lens stuck open again. I am not very happy with this camera as it does not seem to live up to the advertising campaign, which is exactly why we chose this camera!!! Now it will have to go to be repaired again but it is probably out of warranty- Should I bother!!
I also have a 770sw and sent snorkelling in the Ocean in December. The camera was only 3 mths old. I had the same problem. The lens was stuck open and the camera wouldn't turn on. After several days, I actually got the camera to turn on, but there seemed to be moisture near the LCD screen. The pictures were very hazy.
I'm getting ready to send it in for repairs.
Other then that, I really really like the camera.
Let me know if you got any further information on this condition.
