Is there anyway to change the frquency of these uniden 2 way radios

Hi,

Simple answer is no.

These radios were made for the USA where GMRS/FRS is available.
They work on a frequency range of 462-464MHz which in Australia and New Zealand, it is illegal to operate such radios without the apropriate license.

They are UHF commercial band two-way radios, not CB radios.

Note: Be warned that if you operate these radios in ANZ, and you're caught doing so, you will be charged under the radiocommunications violation act, and will be heavily fined and/or imprisoned.

My best advice is to buy a proper 5 watt UHF CB radio/handheld for next to nothing on ebay, and be able to use them legally in ANZ without the need for a license.

Peter

Radio Shack Catalog # 21-1926 FRS radio manual needed. Else tell me if I can change channels 1 - 7 to LO power out. Suspect they are hard coded for HI power out.

Hello,
In short channels 1-7 and channels 15-22 are GMRS channels are not supposed to be operated by anyone that does not have a GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) license issued by the FCC. They automatically run on high power. Channels 8-14 are FRS (Family radio Service) and can be used by anyone and are set to run on Low Power. The power is not adjustable with this radio. So now for the manual. Uniden made this radio for Radio Shack. So this manual is for the same radio only with the actual Uniden name. Same exact physical radio same exact manual. http://www.uniden.com/pdf/GMR1038-2om.pdf

Makes a squlesh sound like a CB radio when monitoring radio or transmitting

GMRS transceivers, yes - like CB radios, have squelch or threshold tuning circuitry. Without it you would be listening to an irritating hissing noise between transmissions, and the radios would not be able to scan. The big difference is that the squelch setting on a CB is adjustable, but it's automatic on GMRS sets.
