I have a Bernina 930 record, zigzag stitch it misses some zigzag stitches & does straight stitches

When on zig zag stitch it starts stitching straight stitch, it will stitch 4 or 5 zigzag stitches then straight stitch and then back to zigzag, it happens when the size of the zigzag stitch goes over the 2 mark meaning anything between the 2 and 4 mark on the zigzag size, not the stitch length

Hi Lyn Hussey, I want to help you with your question, but I need more information from you. Can you please add details in the comment box?

Are the straight stitches always centered on the zig-zag, or are they on one side of the stitch line?

  • Lyn Hussey Jul 01, 2023

The straight stitches are on the left hand side

I have also just discovered a bearing is gone in the motor, should I get it fixed or buy a new motor, I’ve tried to find a new motor but can’t seem to find one , is there another brand that would fit this machine

If your Bernina 930 record sewing machine is experiencing issues with zigzag stitches and straight stitches, here are some troubleshooting steps you can try:

  1. Check the needle: Ensure that the needle is properly inserted and not bent or dull. Replace the needle if necessary, making sure to use the correct needle type and size for the fabric you are sewing.
  2. Adjust the stitch width and length: Verify that the stitch width and length settings are properly adjusted for the desired zigzag stitch. Refer to your machine's user manual for instructions on how to adjust these settings correctly.
  3. Clean and lubricate the machine: A build-up of lint or lack of lubrication can affect the machine's performance. Clean the bobbin area and other accessible parts of the machine using a soft brush or lint brush. Apply a drop of sewing machine oil to the recommended areas as specified in the user manual.
  4. Check the tension: Improper tension can lead to skipped stitches. Ensure that the upper thread tension is properly adjusted for the fabric and thread you are using. Consult the user manual for guidance on adjusting the tension correctly.
  5. Test with different fabrics and threads: Try sewing on different fabrics using different types of thread to determine if the issue is specific to certain materials. This will help identify whether the problem lies with the machine or the materials being used.
  6. Have the machine serviced: If the above steps do not resolve the issue, it may be necessary to have your Bernina 930 record serviced by a professional. There could be underlying mechanical issues that require expert attention.
It's important to note that the Bernina 930 record is a vintage sewing machine, and finding a qualified technician with experience working on older models may be beneficial if further repairs or adjustments are needed.

Bernina 1230 - ZigZag stich is intermittent - sometimes it will only stitch on one side instead of switching back and forth???

Make sure to install a brand new needle. Sometimes a damaged needle will not connect on a zig-zag stitch.

I have a 930 Record that has to be oiled frequently. Don't know if that's the case for your 1230. Some of the mechanisms hang up on the 930 if not lubed at least once a year. I use liquid Tri-Flow Synthetic Lube, avlb at the hardware store or bike shop.

I cant get my stitch Width Zig zag knob to turn om my bernina record 930. Any one have this problem?

Most likely because your machine has not been serviced (oiled & cleaned) in a long time and the old oil has turned to glue and seized. This is probably the most common problem with mechanical sewing machines. A mechanical sewing machine should be regularly maintained..ie every 40 hours of sewing use or at least every six months when not in use. You may want to take it to a Bernina service technician. Ask for a bottle of Bernina oil for CB hook machines and ask if they will show you how to oil it.

Can you use twin needles on bernina 1080

I have a Bernina 930 Record that will take twin (even triple) needles, so I don't know why your 1080 wouldn't. Just be sure your machine does not have the straight stitch plate on it, that your presser foot can accommodate zig-zag stitch, and that you carefully adjust any zig-zag stitch width so the needles do not hit the presser foot or stitch plate. I'd suggest installing the double needle and then carefully hand rotate the handwheel to see if the needles will hit anything. If you can make a full rotation of the handwheel without anything hitting, then slowly try it with the motor engaged.

Can I go from straight stitches to zigzag stiches and back in the same seam?

Hi Susie,

I can't tell whether you mean straight stitching and then turning your work 180 degrees to stitch atop the straight stitches in zig-zag, or continuing around the corner of your straight stitched side using zig-zag. But you can do either. You can mix up straight and zig-zag stitching at will.

Just ease up to a stop, ensuring the needle is positioned down inside the work when you stop.
Lift the foot.
Adjust to your desired stitch setting.
Lower the foot.
Turn the wheel toward you manually to ensure the stitches will be placed where you want them, and
Slowly engage the power again (via foot or thigh lever).

Hope this helps.

Bernina 930 Electronic

Try cleaning and oiling your machine (refer to the owner's manual). Perhaps the stitch width selector has become stuck with old oil. Mechanical Berninas should be cleaned and oiled regularly--it every time a bobbin is changed, every 8 hours of constant sewing, or every 6 months of non-use.

Have a Bernnina record 530. The zigzag will not work, just straight stitch on any width setting. all the other fancy stitches(1-12) work fine.

the cam or gear of the zig zag could be worn or damaged,, having the machine checked,, would tell you for sure what wrong with the zig zag..

Zig Zag Stitch not working

THis problem occurred as I was sewing on Neoprene. I was using Gutterman all-purpose thread and a size 80 needle. Tried switching to a size 70, then to size 90. Still unable to zig zag. After inserting a test sample of cotton, the zig zag worked perfectly, so I knew it was not a mecahnical problem. I switched needles again. This time to size 90 for stretch fabric. Voila! Problem solved.
