There could be several reasons why your Sony VHS player is starting and then immediately stopping with a scrambled picture. Here are a few things you can try:

  1. Check the VHS tape: It's possible that the VHS tape itself is damaged or dirty, causing the player to stop and the picture to become scrambled. Try cleaning the tape or using a different one to see if that solves the issue.
  2. Clean the player: Over time, dust and dirt can accumulate inside the VHS player, which can cause it to malfunction. Try cleaning the player with a soft cloth and compressed air to remove any debris that may be causing the issue.
  3. Check the connections: Make sure that all the cables are properly connected to the player and the TV. Sometimes loose or faulty connections can cause the player to stop working or display a scrambled picture.
  4. Check the settings: Make sure that the player is set to the correct mode (VHS playback, for example) and that the tracking is set correctly. Adjusting the tracking can help to improve the picture quality and prevent it from becoming scrambled.
If none of these steps work, it's possible that the player may need to be repaired or replaced.

WE HAVE A 50H82 PROJECTION TV. THE PICTURE QUALITY IS TERRIBLE (WOBBILY), ALMOST LIKE WHEN YOU NEEDED TO ADJUST THE TRACKING ON A VHS PLAYER. CAN YOU DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM FROM THIS DESCRIPTION?

Most likely the Hyper board is causing the scrambled picture. Very common problem but the boards are no longer available you may try ebay or something for a used one.

Can record on DVD disc will not play on DVD player

Make sure the materials you're trying to record onto the DVD
is not Copyrighted. Try to record a normal TV program onto your
VHS, transfer it to your DVD and then play it. See if that will
work. A VHS movie is usually Copyrighted and Protected by
Macrovision. The picture output can be displayed on a TV set
for viewing but is scrambled black to a DVD Recorder.

I have a Sony VCR. Model SLV-N51. I record a lot of television shows on new Sony VHS tapes and when I play back the tape the picture scrambles every so often. When I rewind it back to where the...

First of all I want you to check the tape inside it's case as soon as the problem occurs. Stop it and eject. You'll find a button on the side of the VHS tape, press it and you should be able to lift the flap. Look at the tape it should be smooth and shiny. If it is there's nothing causing damage. If you see any damage then the mechnism is causing it.
If that is good (which I think it will be) I want you to take off the top cover of the VCR and with some Servisol Video 40 spray, blast all the surfaces that the tape comes into contact with. You can wipe them too with cotton buds. Give the heads special attention. Once done leave for 30 mins and try it out.
I think the problem might be dirt that the head cleaner tape couldn't shift. The sound dipping being the hi-fi sound dropping out reverting back to the mono sound head. When you rewind the video tape acts like a cloth for an instance, hence the better performance.

VHS side doesn't have pictures

the connection from your player to TV is only single output not separated DVD and VHS. If there is picture when used on DVD then you should be having problem with your VHS player. Question.... is your unit new? Is this the first time you encounter this problem? what is the brand of your player?

DVD/VHS PLAYER 5 YRS OLD...WHEN TRYING TO PLAY A DVD, IS SCRAMBLED

The laser is failing. It's called "digital drop-out". A replacement laser runs around $60, but you're better off just replacing the unit.

Tapes not playing

Hey do the tapes play at all? sometimes some tapes recorded
on other machines won't play on others. maybe you need to adjust the tracking on the VCR you are playing it on. If the tape
was recorded on a VCR that is misaligned it might not play back
on another VCR. Also the tape may have been recorded on a
super VHS VCR in et (extended definition) mode if so they won't play on just any VCR. If the picture looks scrambled like a
premium channel on analog cable then it's probably recorded in et.
and if its recorded on super VHS tape it may eject out of your VCR.
They don't make these S-VHS vcrs anymore but people still
have them around. There is also Digital VHS they're not
compatible with VHS either. A VHS recorded in et mode will
play on some more expensive vcrs it should say so on the box
or instructions.
