If your Pioneer PL 640 turntable is experiencing variations in speed, there are a few potential causes to consider. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and fix the issue: Check the belt: The belt on the turntable may have become stretched or worn, which can cause variations in speed. Inspect the belt for any signs of damage or wear, and replace it if necessary. Check the platter: The platter may be dirty or have accumulated debris, which can cause it to spin unevenly. Remove the platter and clean it thoroughly, and make sure it is seated correctly on the spindle. Check the motor: The motor may be malfunctioning or dirty, which can cause variations in speed. Remove the motor and clean it, and check it for any signs of damage or wear. If necessary, replace the motor. Check the pitch control: The pitch control on the turntable may be dirty or malfunctioning, which can cause variations in speed. Clean the pitch control and make sure it is working correctly. Check the power supply: The power supply may be providing insufficient power to the turntable, which can cause variations in speed. Check the voltage output of the power supply, and make sure it is within the manufacturer's recommended range. If none of these steps resolves the issue, you may need to take your turntable to a professional repair technician for further diagnosis and repair.

PL-L50 Pioneer direct drive turntable playing records as if it had a bad belt speed variations in playback, but direct drive has no belts of course. What could be making my records playback speed...

If there is a speed adjustment for 45 and 33 rpm records the contacts or pots need to be sprayed with some electronic cleaner to remove any dust. This is done by removing the bottom of the player and finding the control knobs inside. Electronic cleaner can be found at Radio Shack for around $10 for a large can. It does not take much. Just spay inside the control knobs inside the unit. You will find a small hole where you can put the spray tube that comes with the cleaner. Work the "pots" or knobs back and forth several times to loosen any residue inside the knob casing. Be careful not to shock yourself by removing the bottom. If you are not use to working on electronics it may be better to let someone else with more knowledge tackle the job.

Pioneer PL-630 turntable won't hold correct speed with the quartz lock on or off. I cleaned the switches with no change, speed still varies.

Replace the speed selector switch, if you can still get one...They were prone to oxidation caused by gasses emitted from the rubber foot close by... The Pioneer remedy was change switch AND rubber foot for a neoprene one

Pioneer PL-12D TURNTABLE. Plays too fast.

Judging by your message I guess it's a secondhand machine, you have either been given or purchased. I suspect that someone might have played around with the speed preset to the motor. Take a look around the deck see if you can find it, sometimes there are two, one for each speed. They should correct it, unless something has gone.
