I bought a red L820 and had this issue above where my voice would sound muffled only sometimes during a video, so I thought I would buy another Coolpix L820 thinking this one is broke. Well, I bought another Coolpix and I am having the same issue with this new one too. Is it me, or are all the Coolpix L820s having this muffled voice sound problem during making a video?
The manual says that the stereo microphones are either side at the rear of the flash. Make sure nothing is near them. It also says that it can be affected if the flash is raised. It sounds like a firmware issue, and it is a pity there is no external mic jack socket.

Hi Andrew,
Thank you for answering my question so quickly and perhaps you may have solved my issue with the muffling of my voice during a video, but I will have do another video to determine this. I for sure will keep my fingers away from the microphone inlet vents between where it is label "L stereo R" located behind the flash feature on my next video. It is possible i might have blocked the microphone inlet vents in previous videos i have taken in the past to cause this intermittent issue with my voice being muffled during a video. I will let you know my results soon after i evaluate my next few videos.
Here is another page i found in the manual referring to the microphone inlet vents referring to not to block the microphone inlet vents.https://www.manualslib.com/manual/468604...
I think the microphones are in a bad spot and are easy to get covered by fingers or even the strap. Try taking video on a tripod rather than holding the camera and see if it fixes the issue.
I read the manual via the Nikon website

..
I did another video and never held the camera in my hands, so the microphone inlet vents were never touched or blocked. I have a four inch three leg tripod I screwed into the bottom of the camera and held the tripod legs in my hands and did a video and keep the camera still the whole time.
Well, after watching back this video the first 12 minutes of this 29 minute video my voice sounded perfect and not a muffle, but as the video continued on my voice started to sound muffled and at that point the camera was even on the tripod perfectly still on a table. I do not think the microphone inlets are the issue since my hands were never on the camera during the 29 minute video i took today.
I am going to try another video with my camera soon and completely on the tripod the entire video to see if my voice gets muffled again and i will let you know what happens.
Meanwhile, I am going to read through the manual again for the 5th time and see if there might be a clue to why i have this voice muffling during a video.
Having two identical coolpix L820 camera with the same issue is confusing to me since i tend to think it is weird to have this muffle issue in two different L820 or maybe i do? I don't want to buy a third L820 and have the same issue occur.
Interesting. If I was buying another device, I think I would be buying a dedicated video camera. Have you tried asking Nikon direct? You have one under full maker warranty.
I wonder if storage card or video format makes a difference?
Storage Media
SD memory card
SDHC memory card
SDXC memory card

HD: 1280x720p/ 30fps

HS 1280x720/ 60fps
HS 640x480/ 120fps

iFrame 540: 960x540/ 30fps
Movie file format: MPEG-4 AVC H.264

I have not asked Nikon direct. The Nikon phone number i have is 800 645 6687. I plan on calling next week after the New Year holiday. Is there a tech phone number for Nikon you know of?
I must state that both of my L820 i bought used and the most recent L820 was purchased on Ebay a week ago.
My other L820 i bought from a used from a business that does nothing but sell camera's which was a few years ago. Both of these camera features work 100% perfect except for the muffle issue I am having and look brand new.
I will look into the storage cards and video format even though i don't hardly have any experience with Camera's at all. I can try a new storage card and perhaps a different video format, but will take a lot of trial and effort.
I am open to any other suggestions you might have......
Thanks again for your response to my issue.
If you contact Nikon, there will be a technical assistance or support option.
I have 60 years experience with cameras, but from the days when they had film. I also did wedding photography professionally for a studio in the 1980s using a Bronica 645 medium format camera. I also have an Olympus OM1 and an OM4. I have a Canon digital and a Megxon DSLR. These days, my iPhone 12 Pro takes some of the best images and video I have ever taken.
