Just picked one up off the side of the road, everything else works great but the DVD player makes a whirring noise and won't open. The tv reads no disc and I can't see one in the drive. How can I manually open the dvd player?

There should be a small hole located on the face or on the side of it. Use a paper clip to stick in the hole. You will have to straighten the paper clip first.

This is EXTREMELY common and is why I absolutely do NOT recommend buying combination units. You can order a replacement drive for it (usually), but it will often not be worth the price (the laser assembly is often over $50 and can sometimes be in the $100's.)
Unplug it from the wall, wait an hour to discharge it completely, flip it over, take the back cover off, access the dvd mechanism (you will have to remove temporarily some boards to have full access) and unscrew the top arm - one screw on either side. Take off the disk and reassemble it.
After working with my technolocically challenged mother on the phone for about an hour we found out that pushing the power button on the remote control and the stop button on the DVD player at the same time will unlock the DVD player. Hope this helps.
Make sure the TV is not in SAP mode and that the TV speakers are set to "on" in the Audio setup menu. If a cable box is being used, make sure the volume is turned up.
