RUUD Silhouette II UGLH-15EARJR not always coming on

Blower comes on, about 30 seconds later, I hear a click and the far right flame comes on, 5 seconds later, the flame goes out. Throughout the day, these steps repeat and eventually all flames come on. Why don't all flames come on the first time? I have cleaned the flame sensor with steel wool and no difference. Thanks.

It sounds like there may be an issue with the ignition system of your RUUD Silhouette II UGLH-15EARJR furnace. Based on your description, it appears that the furnace is not always coming on correctly. The blower comes on, but after 30 seconds, you hear a click, and the far-right flame comes on, but it goes out after 5 seconds. Eventually, throughout the day, all the flames come on, but they don't come on the first time.
This problem could be caused by several issues, including a malfunctioning ignition system, a problem with the flame sensor, a dirty or clogged burner, or a problem with the gas valve.
To troubleshoot this issue, I would recommend checking the following:

  • Check the flame sensor and make sure it's clean and properly aligned with the flame
  • Check the burner and make sure it's clean and free of debris
  • Check the gas valve, it could be stuck closed or malfunctioning
  • Check the thermocouple, it could be faulty
  • Check the control module, it could be malfunctioning
It's important to note that gas appliances are complex systems that require specialized knowledge and skills to troubleshoot and fix. If you are not comfortable working on these issues, it's best to call for professional help, as it may require specialized knowledge and skills to troubleshoot and fix the problem.

Update: fixed. I replaced the flame sensor a couple weeks ago and it didn't make any difference. I noticed one day that if the 1st burner lit and I blew on it, it would ignite the rest of the burners. The fix was to replace the burner halves assembly. In my case, part AS-60993-06. The old one had gotten rusty between the 1st and 3rd openings, not allowing gas to go from 1 to 2 sometimes. I bought the part from a local RUUD parts seller, but it looked like it was poorly made - I had to make a couple minor modifications to make it fit.

By your description I gather this is the exhaust flue blower motor. This is known as the draft inducer. There is a sensor attached to that with a tube and it measures the flow in the system and if it fails the furnace shuts off. Pressure Switch 42 24194 82

Hello, this sounds like a flame sensor issue or high limit switch problem. First, turn off power to the Furnace and remove flame sensor, it is a small metal rod on the opposite side of the igniter, use some steel wool to clean it up and reinstall it. If that does not solve the problem then inspect you filter, blower wheel for dust or dirt, also make sure the blower motor is running at the proper speed. I hope this helps.

My ruud silhouette turns on, the burners turn on, but I don't think the fan is working, within 10 seconds, the burners turn off and then it won't come on again.

Your system has a safety control called a flame rod. It is located in the flame path of the last burner that lights up, either far right or far left. It looks like a stick (or Rod) and has one wire going to it. Take a green scrub pad and rub the rod after it has cooled. Check all connections at the circuit board and any ground wires going to the frame of the heating unit. There should be an error code that flashes after 2 or 3 attempts at ignition and a chart on the wiring diagram that may assist you in the repair.

Rob, the blower always blows into the furnace therefore the arrow should always point to the furnace. As far as the unit failing at times, you may have a lose wire. Inspect all wires and reconnect them after cleaning if they look suspicious. Turn off the power to the unit prior to this. Your Ruud may have a diagnostic light that may help you troubleshoot the furnace next time it fails to operate. Check on the wiring diagram that is pasted on the reverse side of one of the panels. If it indicates a flashing or blinking light, you may be able to get a starting point where to look.

I HAVE A RUUD SILHOUETTE II GAS FURNACE. The glow rod glows bright, the fan whirrs for 30 seconds there is a click and nothing happens...the fan stops. No flame...nothing.??

this can be a few things. tonight, i fixed one with the same symptoms and it ended up being the gas valve was bad and the gas pressure on the outlet side was only 1 in water column on an LP furnace. That is one thing and would have to be checked with a manometer. The other is the board may not be sending 24volts to the gas valve telling it to open. hope this helps

Are all your supply vents open? The furnace may be oversized or have a air blockage. Have you always kept the filter changed. Newer heaters need the ducts sized right. If the new unit has worked great in the past then it's probally not the duct work.

Hi, I have a ruud silhouette II furnace. The ignitor clicks on and the flame shoots out but then clicks off after a few seconds. Is that an ignitor problem?

Sounds like a flame rod issue or the flame is not getting to it in time. The flame rod is located either far right or far left in the burner box and has only one wire going to it. It should be in line with the flame on a burner. The computer allows only a second or two for the all burners to lite and to get to the flame rod. Check the flame travel from burner to burner. You may have to clean the burners, the flame tray to each burner and the flame rod. Also check any electrical connection at the flame rod, circuit board and the grounds to the furnace cabinet.
