I want to use a headset with the NEC etw-16dc-2. Do I put the RJ9 plug in the back or in the headset. I can hear the other line but I am on mute. I think I'm doing it wrong. There is not headset button on the phone

To use a headset with the NEC etw-16dc-2, you should plug the RJ9 connector into the headset jack on the back of the phone. Once you have connected the headset, you will need to activate it for use by pressing the Headset key, which is typically located on the bottom row of keys on the phone. If there is no specific Headset key on your phone, you can try pressing the Speaker key to activate the headset. If you are still unable to use the headset, you may need to check the settings on your phone to ensure that the headset is enabled and configured correctly.

On this system since it is an older NEC you will need to purchase some special boards that go into the system and then this would have to be programmed. This is not a task for the untrained.
The fine wires in
the cord casing do break easily. If your RJ9 connection is loose, then
the brass contacts are not making good contact inside the T10 base. Not many options, unless you can get the RJ9 clip repaired, but to get a new system.
